Another university copes with frat-related death

The University of Iowa bans alcohol at fraternity and sorority functions following the death of a freshman

Another major university has decided to ban alcohol at Greek social events following the death of a freshman at a fraternity formal over the weekend.

The Greek community at the University of Iowa issued the ban after  the death of Kamil Jackowski at the Lake of the Ozarks in Missouri, reports the Iowa City Press-Citizen newspaper. Jackowski was found unresponsive shortly before 7 a.m. Sunday in a room on the Lake Resort, authorities told the newspaper.

The university's Greek councils also are convening a task force to look at alcohol use on campus, the paper reported.

Pennsylvania State University earlier this year banned alcohol at Greek events for the rest of the semester and issued new rules for fraternities and sororities in the wake of sophomore Tim Piazza's death following a fall down stairs at a Beta Theta Pi pledge party. Authorities continue to investigate Piazza' s death, and Penn State has permanently banned the frat for forced drinking, hazing and other illegal activity.
