Mayor Redd's inauguration set for tomorrow

Camden Mayor Dana L. Redd will be sworn in for the second time as mayor of Camden Tuesday at 2 p.m.

It's that time of the year. Inaugurations and reorganizations.

Tomorrow, Mayor Dana L. Redd will take her oath of office for the second time at 2 p.m. at Antioch Baptist Church at 690 Ferry Avenue. Redd won re-election in November against challengers, Republican Arnold Davis and Independents Pastor Amir Khan, Pastor Clyde Cook and Councilman Brian Coleman.

Redd led her nearest rival, independent Amir Khan, by a 3-1 ratio in the election which saw only 30 percent of registered voters turn out to the polls.

Councilman Curtis Jenkins, Councilwoman Marilyn Torres and Councilman-Elect Arthur Barclay will also be inaugurated at the ceremony.

Barclay was picked by the party to run for the seat vacated by Councilwoman Deborah Person-Polk.

He is a 2000 graduate of Camden High and South Jersey Basketball Hall of Fame inductee, has emphasized bringing more youth mentoring and recreation programs to the city. Barclay graduated from the University of Memphis, where the basketball team won the NIT championship in 2002. He now helps coach Camden High's varsity squad.

Barclay ran unsuccessfully for council in 2009 with former mayoral candidate Angel Cordero against Redd.

City Council will also hold its reorganization meeting on Tuesday at 5 p.m. to establish which council persons will sit on which committees.

Last Friday during the end of a snow storm, Camden County Freeholders held their reorganization meeting for the all-Democrat board which will retain its Director Louis Cappelli and incumbents Edward McDonnell of Pennsauken and Carmen Rodriguez of Merchantville.
