Newtown's Temperance House closes its doors

The owners of the State Street landmark called it quits after 11 years.

The latest incarnation of the Temperance House, a long-standing bar and restaurant in Newtown, has closed.

"It was a difficult decision, but the time has come for a new adventure," the website says in a statement. The owners left a similar message on the restaurant's answering machine. They could not be reached for comment.

The owners thanked customers for 11-plus years of service. But the place had been around in one form or another dating back to the 1700s. The building, on State Street, first opened as an inn in 1772.
