160-year-old bridge closed in Buckingham

Large hole in wall made stone arch bridge unsafe.

The 160-year-old Burnt House Hill Road stone bridge over Watson Creek in Buckingham Township was closed Wednesday because of severe structural damage, PennDOT reported.

A large hole on the outside wall is compromising the span's structural integrity, PennDOT District Executive Lester C. Toaso said in a written statement.

The bridge is on Burnt House Hill Road, between Church Road and June Meadow Drive. A posted detour will take motorists over Route 202, Route 413 and Mechanicsville Road, PennDOT said. Local access will be maintained on Burnt House Hill Road up to the bridge.

The stone arch bridge, built in 1851, carries an average of 1,500 vehicles a day, PennDOT said.
