Two weekend concerts to help and honor young people

The sounds of Jersey Boys!, other Broadway hits and classical works will be featured.

The sounds of the Jersey Boys!, the Delaware Valley Philharmonic Orchestra, and young musicians and composers will be featured at two concerts in Lower Bucks County this weekend.

At 8 p.m., Friday, four members of the original cast of Jersey Boys! will help raise money for a baseball field for children with disabilities.

And at 8 p.m., Saturday, the orchestra will put on its annual "Youth in the Arts" concert, with classic and Broadway music and showcasing the works of area composers, poets and other artists.

As a benefit for The Miracle League of Northampton,  Christian Hoff, Michael Longoria, Daniel Reichard and J. Robert Spencer will sing top hits from the 1960s, including the Beatles, Beach Boys, the Temptations, the Jackson Five and the Four Seasons.

A portion of the proceeds from the concert at Council Rock High School South will go to the Miracle League, which is building the baseball field at the Northampton Municipal Park in Churchville.

The Delaware Valley Philharmonic Orchestra will put on its Firebirds, Dreamgirls and Chorus Lines Concert at the Christian Life Center in Bensalem.

The orchestra will perform Dvorak - Movement I of Symphony No. 8 with the Council Rock High School North orchestra. It also will perform young composers' works and Stravinsky's "Firebird Suite."

The orchestra also will team up with students in Rider University's Westminster College of Arts Choir to perform Broadway classics such as "Dreamgirls,"  "At the Ballet" from Chorus Line and "Sing for Your Supper" from The Boys from Syracuse.

Each spring, the "Youth in the Arts" program  showcases winners of the orchestra's competition for musical composition, art and poetry.  This year's winners include:

Music Composition:  Derek Bauer, 6th grade, Maple Point Middle School; Aaron Newitt, 7th grade, William Penn School;  and Ashley Jeffreys, 11th grade 11, Notre Dame High School.

Outstanding Poetry:  Katie McNamee, 6th grade 6, Our Lady of Mount Carmel; Meri Twomey, 8th grade, St. Ignatius of Antioch; Divya Ramesh, 12th grade, West Windsor-Plainsboro High School South;  and Jordan Whittal of the Cambridge School.

Art Division:  Maura Harkins, 6th grade, St. Ignatius of Antioch; Anne Beradino, 12th grade,  The Crefeld School; and Christopher Carney of the Cambridge School.

A pre-concert lecture will start at 7 p.m. at the center, at 3100 Galloway Rd.

Tickets cost $25 for adults and $20 for senior citizens. There is no charge for children and students.
