The Bryz is Back

Monday, March 5, 2012, 12:24 AM
Although we are not prepared to go "all in" with him just yet, it is worth pointing out that Ilya Bryzgalov has been earning at least a little more of his money over the last few weeks. Since Jan. 17, he is 8-3-3 with 2.08 goals-against average and a .922 save percentage. So, cue up the Elton John... Read more

Drexel Needs to Make Amends

Friday, March 2, 2012, 12:00 PM
In Drexel's 10 previous seasons in the CAA, they were eliminated in the conference tournament by a lower-seeded team six times. That could prove to be problematic, since every team is seeded lower than the No. 1 Dragons this season. They open tournament play Saturday in a quarterfinal at noon. Drexel's... Read more

Willt Week: Day 5

Thursday, March 1, 2012, 12:15 PM
The Wilt Chamberlain-Bill Russell comparisons are a plenty, but we thought we'd end Wilt Week with our favorite: their totals for the 10 seasons they were both in the league (1959-60 through 1968-69). Please note that in those 10 seasons, Wilt made more field goals than Russell attempted, made more... Read more

About this blog

Boop – who goes by Bob Vetrone Jr. when he is undercover or paying bills – has been at the Daily News since 1982, after working for five years at the Philadelphia Bulletin up to its closing. Along with helping to build the sports scoreboards most nights, he has had great input into the papers’ special sports pullouts – March Madness, Broad Street Run, Record Breakers, Greatest Moments – as well as its day-to-day, award-winning event coverage.

A 1980 graduate of North Catholic, he took some evening college courses. Those lasted right up until the first conflict with a Big 5 doubleheader.

His favorite books growing up were the NBA Guide and the Baseball Encyclopedia, which was, for all intents and purposes, the Internet before there was an Internet.

He has been immersed in sports statistics since the early 70s, when his father (long-time sports writer, broadcaster and the Daily News’ Buck The Bartender), would take him into the Bulletin newsroom overnight in the summer and let him update the Phillies statistics in a little, black spiral notebook. But things have changed tremendously in the decades since … He now uses a big, black spiral notebook.
