The Eagles' Defense Leads the NFL in ...

Friday, November 16, 2012, 2:29 AM
The Eagles are the only team in the NFL that has not allowed an opposing player to rush for 100 or more yards this season. Sure, that is more reaching than I will do over the Thanksgiving dinner table Thursday ... but if you have watched this defense perform this season — especially over the... Read more

Castillo vs. Bowles

Thursday, November 15, 2012, 1:56 AM
Todd Bowles has had his hands around the entire Eagles defense for three games now, exactly half as long as Juan Castillo had with the 2012 defense. There are some interesting comparisons to be made when you put the numbers achieved by each coach's defensive tenure side-by-side. For instance: ♦... Read more

The Baseball Writers' Association of America will announce the 2012 Most Valuable Player Award winners Thursday on MLB Network (8 p.m.). The Detroit Pistons come into the Wells Fargo Center Wednesday with the worst start (0-8) in their history. (They had started out 0-7 twice before this season: 1962-63 and 1980-81). They are the 26th NBA team to start a season 0-8 (the 0-6 Wizards are working their way to being the 27th). Twenty of... Read more

The Eagles' Starting Nine

Tuesday, November 13, 2012, 2:29 AM
Let's face it, I have a better chance of starting at quarterback for the Eagles Sunday at Washington than Michael Vick does. Vick, suffering from a "pretty significant concussion" according to Eagles' head coach Andy Reid, will give way to Nick Foles, who finished off the Cowboys game Sunday (right)... Read more

Eagles-Cowboys Leftovers

Monday, November 12, 2012, 11:30 AM
In no particular order ... ♦ Monday is Day No. 5,055 of the Andy Reid era. ♦ The Cowboys had more points in the fourth quarter (21) Sunday than they had net yards (19). ♦ The Eagles have allowed three return TDs in the same game four times, twice under Andy Reid and twice under... Read more
About this blog

Boop – who goes by Bob Vetrone Jr. when he is undercover or paying bills – has been at the Daily News since 1982, after working for five years at the Philadelphia Bulletin up to its closing. Along with helping to build the sports scoreboards most nights, he has had great input into the papers’ special sports pullouts – March Madness, Broad Street Run, Record Breakers, Greatest Moments – as well as its day-to-day, award-winning event coverage.

A 1980 graduate of North Catholic, he took some evening college courses. Those lasted right up until the first conflict with a Big 5 doubleheader.

His favorite books growing up were the NBA Guide and the Baseball Encyclopedia, which was, for all intents and purposes, the Internet before there was an Internet.

He has been immersed in sports statistics since the early 70s, when his father (long-time sports writer, broadcaster and the Daily News’ Buck The Bartender), would take him into the Bulletin newsroom overnight in the summer and let him update the Phillies statistics in a little, black spiral notebook. But things have changed tremendously in the decades since … He now uses a big, black spiral notebook.
