The Lost Art of the Takeaway

Sunday, December 23, 2012, 12:00 AM
The two things you ask from an NFL defense are to prevent points and take the ball away from the opponent, preferably via a turnover. The latter is an art that seems to have been lost on the Eagles lately. Here are the defense's takeaway numbers by coordinator under Andy Reid: Coordinator Seasons ... Read more

Andy Reid Trivia ... While We Still Can ...

Friday, December 21, 2012, 3:42 AM
Only five coaches in football have more regular season wins than the Eagles' Andy Reid, yet no NFL or AFL championship on his resume. For those wondering why Bud Grant is not on the list, his Minnesota Vikings were the 1969 NFL Champions (the last before the 1970 AFL-NFL merger), who went on lose... Read more

Friday, December 21, 2012, 3:28 AM
The Phillies are hoping that the signing of right-handed Mike Adams as their set-up guy will go a long way toward reversing their 2012 status as the NL team with the worst winning percentage in games in which they led after six innings and in games in which they led after seven innings: Leading After... One of the advantages in having a team in each of the four major sports is that rarely is the time when none are good ... "good" here being defined as finishing with a record over .500. Ladies and gentlemen of Philadelphia, welcome to "rarely." Assuming the NHL season is shot — and all indications... Read more

Phillies lead MLB In HBL (Hit By Lannan)

Wednesday, December 19, 2012, 2:11 AM
You are probably already aware that John Lannan, introduced as the newest Phillies pitcher Tuesday at Citizens Bank Park, made his 2007 major-league debut one to remember for Phils fans as he plunked Chase Utley with a pitch, broke his hand and sent the second baseman to the bench for a month. About this blog

Boop – who goes by Bob Vetrone Jr. when he is undercover or paying bills – has been at the Daily News since 1982, after working for five years at the Philadelphia Bulletin up to its closing. Along with helping to build the sports scoreboards most nights, he has had great input into the papers’ special sports pullouts – March Madness, Broad Street Run, Record Breakers, Greatest Moments – as well as its day-to-day, award-winning event coverage.

A 1980 graduate of North Catholic, he took some evening college courses. Those lasted right up until the first conflict with a Big 5 doubleheader.

His favorite books growing up were the NBA Guide and the Baseball Encyclopedia, which was, for all intents and purposes, the Internet before there was an Internet.

He has been immersed in sports statistics since the early 70s, when his father (long-time sports writer, broadcaster and the Daily News’ Buck The Bartender), would take him into the Bulletin newsroom overnight in the summer and let him update the Phillies statistics in a little, black spiral notebook. But things have changed tremendously in the decades since … He now uses a big, black spiral notebook.
