Chuck, Bubba Chuck and Jrue

Monday, November 26, 2012, 3:16 AM
Jrue Holiday Sunday notched just the Sixers' sixth 30-point, 13-assist performance over the last 28 seasons (since 1985-86, which is how far back we can search the database at basketball-reference.com). He joins Allen Iverson (who did it four times) and Charles Barkley (who did it once). The Sixers... Read more

MNF: Monday Night Fiasco

Monday, November 26, 2012, 12:03 AM
This Eagles-Panthers game will go down as one of the worst matchups ever — records-wise — on “Monday Night Football.’’ Only twice in the series’ long history have two teams (with a minimum of 20 decisions between them) come into a MNF contest with worse combined... Read more

Streaking in the Big 5

Sunday, November 25, 2012, 3:32 PM
It took five extra minutes, but La Salle finally ended its 10-game losing streak to Villanova Sunday with a 77-74 overtime victory at Gola Arena. Even with the loss, Villanova still holds the longest current winning streak against a City Series opponent, having won their last nine meetings with Penn... Read more

One Last Time: RG3's Perfect Day

Tuesday, November 20, 2012, 2:49 AM
All we can say is, hats off to the great Rueben Frank (@RoobCSN) and pro-football-reference.com. On a day when we thought we couldn't possible scan the Eagles-Redskins stat pages again looking for interesting numbers without wanting to poke a paper clip in our ear, that pair came to our rescue. Roob... Read more

Eagles-Redskins Leftovers

Monday, November 19, 2012, 9:10 AM
Some statistical nuggets leftover from the debacle that was Redskins 31, Eagles 6: ♦ In their last 247:32 of playing time, the Eagles have been outscored by 140-59. ♦ In their last 12 road games, the Eagles have 35 turnovers and 19 takeaways. That's a minus-16 turnover differential. ♦... Read more

Eagles Math: 4 x 13 = Baaad

Monday, November 19, 2012, 1:52 AM
Now, this is starting to get real bad ... historically bad. The Eagles have lost four consecutive games by at least 13 points for the first time since 1976 and just the third time in their history. In 1971, they managed to lose each of their first five contests by at least a baker's dozen. We even... Read more

Jrue's Cruising

Sunday, November 18, 2012, 12:00 AM
Jrue Holiday started the season off with a bang, registering three double-digit assist games in the Sixers’ first five contests of the season. And although he has cooled off a bit since then (he is averaging 8.6 assists per game coming into Sunday night's game against the Cavaliers), early indications... Read more
About this blog

Boop – who goes by Bob Vetrone Jr. when he is undercover or paying bills – has been at the Daily News since 1982, after working for five years at the Philadelphia Bulletin up to its closing. Along with helping to build the sports scoreboards most nights, he has had great input into the papers’ special sports pullouts – March Madness, Broad Street Run, Record Breakers, Greatest Moments – as well as its day-to-day, award-winning event coverage.

A 1980 graduate of North Catholic, he took some evening college courses. Those lasted right up until the first conflict with a Big 5 doubleheader.

His favorite books growing up were the NBA Guide and the Baseball Encyclopedia, which was, for all intents and purposes, the Internet before there was an Internet.

He has been immersed in sports statistics since the early 70s, when his father (long-time sports writer, broadcaster and the Daily News’ Buck The Bartender), would take him into the Bulletin newsroom overnight in the summer and let him update the Phillies statistics in a little, black spiral notebook. But things have changed tremendously in the decades since … He now uses a big, black spiral notebook.
