Whom Would The Flyers Play

POSTED: Tuesday, April 24, 2012, 7:31 AM

Since the NHL reseeds after the first round, it is not always easy to figure out who awaits you in the Conference Semifinals, especially if you are the first team from the conference to advance.

Below are the eight scenarios for whom the Flyers will face in Round 2:

IF THESE TEAMS ADVANCE: FLYERS PLAY:
Rangers (1) Bruins (2) Panthers (3)    Rangers (5 vs. 1)
Rangers (1) Bruins (2) Devils (6) Bruins (5 vs. 2)
Rangers (1) Capitals (7)     Panthers (3) Panthers (5 vs. 3)
Rangers (1) Capitals (7) Devils (6) Devils (5 vs. 6)
Senators (8)      Bruins (2) Panthers (3) Panthers (5 vs. 3)
Senators (8) Bruins (2) Devils (6) Devils (5 vs. 6)
Senators (8) Capitals (7) Panthers (3) Capitals (5 vs. 7)
Senators (8) Capitals (7) Devils (6) Senators (5 vs. 8)

Go Sens, Go Caps, Go Devils. Would give Flyers home-ice for the rest of conference playoffs.

Gee, there's only one scenario out of eight in which we'd face the Rangers in the next round. Why do I have this weird feeling that somehow, someway, that seven-to-one shot is going to happen?

Florida winning. Bruins win in 7. Rangers win in 7. We play rangers and we take them in 6 games. They have one star only issue is, he plays goal and is the best in NHL

All the teams that would given the Flyers a favorable matchup were up 3-2 and now all the series are tied. No telling how things will go!

fentonhardy is likely right (and it's because the Rangers and Bruins are significant home favorites in games 7, and Florida are slight home favorites)...in any event, not so sure that the Flyers woud be better off with Bruins either and given how well the Flyers are playing right now, their best chance to beat Rangers might be immediately while remembering how fast and inspired they played to beat formidable Penguins..if they end up playing Bruins it probably just means they would need to play Rangers in next round as it's unlikely Rangers beat Ottawa and then lose to Devils...seeing Flyers-Pens series and Rangers-Senators I can't understand why the Flyers seem so outclassed by Rangers..even with Rangers superior defense and goaltending, flyers swarming approach and speed and quick puck movement seems to beat good gaolies when Flyers really stick wiht it...maybe odds will work in their favor as it's hard to see team lose 10 times to another team in one season without figuring things out (though that didn't help the Penguins)

one really should hope for Florida win now --that would mean if Rangers win they would then play Caps who have a puncher's chance of taking them out, and Flyers would play Florida instead of hated Devils (and home ice really isn't such a factor); and if Rangers lose then Flyers would then play Caps (instead of Ottawa which looks better right now)

Thank you Caps. No Bruins, and no Rangers for us (if Boop's math is correct) in the next round. Yahoo!

About this blog

Boop – who goes by Bob Vetrone Jr. when he is undercover or paying bills – has been at the Daily News since 1982, after working for five years at the Philadelphia Bulletin up to its closing. Along with helping to build the sports scoreboards most nights, he has had great input into the papers’ special sports pullouts – March Madness, Broad Street Run, Record Breakers, Greatest Moments – as well as its day-to-day, award-winning event coverage.

A 1980 graduate of North Catholic, he took some evening college courses. Those lasted right up until the first conflict with a Big 5 doubleheader.

His favorite books growing up were the NBA Guide and the Baseball Encyclopedia, which was, for all intents and purposes, the Internet before there was an Internet.

He has been immersed in sports statistics since the early 70s, when his father (long-time sports writer, broadcaster and the Daily News’ Buck The Bartender), would take him into the Bulletin newsroom overnight in the summer and let him update the Phillies statistics in a little, black spiral notebook. But things have changed tremendously in the decades since … He now uses a big, black spiral notebook. Email him at boopstats@phillynews.com.
