The $24,000 Snap

POSTED: Wednesday, December 5, 2012, 1:41 AM

Who should be the next Eagle to get a pink slip?
Howard Mudd
Andy Reid
Nnamdi Asomugha
Dominique Rodgers-Cromartie

If you're having trouble spending all of your Christmas bonus and find yourself with an extra $24,000 or so laying around, here's an idea: Pay Michael Vick to come over to your house ... bend over in front of him ... hike him a football ... and then write him a check. You do that, and all you've really done is imitate Eagles owner Jeffrey Lurie.

Assuming he is indeed finished playing for the Eagles, CSNPhilly.com's Reuben Frank tells us that Vick will end up being paid $35,500,000 of the $100 million contract he signed in August 2011. Considering that he took 1,474 snaps since then, that comes to $24,084 a snap. That may be tipping money to people named Vick, Cataldi and Barkann, but it sounds more like college tuition to us.

It is also three times as much as Vick made per snap in his first two seasons with the Eagles ($7,930 for each of 867 plays, including playoffs).

Below are how Vick's numbers for his first two years in South Philly compare with his last two. We particularly like his total TDs to turnover difference (plus-24 in 2009-10; minus-1 in 2011-12) and his passing TD percentage (which dropped off by two whole percentage points since signing the megacontract).

And below that are what Vick was seemingly paid over both those periods for some of the things he did on the football field. (How does $3.5 million per win over the last two seasons grab you? Or the nearly $500,000 earned for the 77-yard passing TD to DeSean Jackson, at $6,492 a yard, earlier this season?)

You read on while we go break open my daughters' piggy banks ... Those property taxes aren't going to pay themselves.

Isn't 24million of the (less than) 40million guaranteed going to the people administrating the bankruptcy leins?

He made 130million in salary + endorsements while in Atlanta, then went bankrupt, then prison, then Philly, then 100mill 40mill guaranteed Philly contract with 24mill going to leins???

I don't like MV but I do not hate him. I am just fascinated with how amazingly fast money enters and exits this man's life.

If you give me 1million in ca$h I would work to turn it into 2mill not 0.

Eagles are still profiting off of the players, so what's your point????

Look, part of Vick's arsenal is/was his running game. So, just like a running back, at 32 he's in decline. And, accordingly, he'll be cut. Do you degrade running backs when they reach 32 and their numbers decline???

Also, everybody says shady's numbers are down this year because of the o-line. If you mention it for shady, you should mention it for Vick ;)

    Stupid article.

    Agree with eagles100.

Another point is that this article unfairly presents the "cost" of each Vick snap, TD, etc as if he just shows up on game day and does no preparation for those games. He has invested thousands of hours and gallons of sweat throughout the year, both in the off season and the season itself, in order to be trained and conditioned to the degree that he could compete at an NFL level when games days come. I'm not a big Vick fan, and Vick is very well paid. But Bob V Jr, your article is simple-minded. It distorts the true cost players pay to entertain us on Sunday afternoons.

Without a doubt, the biggest bust in Philadelphia sports history. Where are all the Pro-Vick supporters now. I was against this guy from the beginning. Mostly becuase of the reprehensible acts he performed on innocent animals. (He'll have to answer to that when he meets his maker.). But also because he just isn't that good. He had a stretch of 3 or 4 games. For that he gets $100,000,000. Andy Reid and Jeffrey Lurie are the 2 biggest laughing stocks of the NFL. They have turned a solid franchise into a joke.

I garuantee he will not be answering to his maker for anything done to an animal aka source of food. Men have made the distinction between domesticated and wild animal not "his maker". But what I do know is that "the maker" tells us to love thy neighbor as we love ourselves and to forgive a man 70 times 7. He also say how can you love ME if you do not love your brother?

What I will guarantee is that YOU will have to answer to your "maker" for your lies and hatred towards Michael Vick... Worshiping animals violates the 1st of the ten commandments...

Exactly, also 1 John 1:9 says: "If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just and will forgive us our sins and purify us from all unrighteousness." Mike asked for forgiveness during a visit from Tony Dungy while he was in prison. While everyone has been saying he will be punished by his "maker", the bible says he is already forgiven.

What does what Michael Barkann makes have to do with the story?? Is it 35 mil? Is is 300K? Whatever it it it does not matter and the reference is not even clear. People are generally paid by supply and demand. Stupid article.

So Far Vick is better than Foles. I guess most Eagles fan are in a "Pipe Dream" regarding Foles. To be honest, Foles is just another Kolb, Skelton.

Could you post that exact quote in one more article please? It gets better with every reading! You must be in a "crack dream" if what you watched of Vick at the beginning of this season and all of last year makes you think that Vick is a starting-caliber QB in this league! Everyone talks about the hurt line as his problems this year. What happened last year? Oh yeah, the Eagles were the only team the didn't have OTAs. Vick's career is just one excuse after another for mediocre to poor performance!

Gdibig, fairfan63 did make any excuses for Vick, so what are you talking about. If you really think Foles is better than Vick, then your vision is cloudy. I understand that you hate Vick and this or that, but his line did hurt him. Did Vick have some bad moments...ofcourse he did, but to think Foles is better is just rediculous.

About this blog

Boop – who goes by Bob Vetrone Jr. when he is undercover or paying bills – has been at the Daily News since 1982, after working for five years at the Philadelphia Bulletin up to its closing. Along with helping to build the sports scoreboards most nights, he has had great input into the papers’ special sports pullouts – March Madness, Broad Street Run, Record Breakers, Greatest Moments – as well as its day-to-day, award-winning event coverage.

A 1980 graduate of North Catholic, he took some evening college courses. Those lasted right up until the first conflict with a Big 5 doubleheader.

His favorite books growing up were the NBA Guide and the Baseball Encyclopedia, which was, for all intents and purposes, the Internet before there was an Internet.

He has been immersed in sports statistics since the early 70s, when his father (long-time sports writer, broadcaster and the Daily News’ Buck The Bartender), would take him into the Bulletin newsroom overnight in the summer and let him update the Phillies statistics in a little, black spiral notebook. But things have changed tremendously in the decades since … He now uses a big, black spiral notebook. Email him at boopstats@phillynews.com.
