The $24,000 Snap

POSTED: Wednesday, December 5, 2012, 1:41 AM

Who should be the next Eagle to get a pink slip?
Howard Mudd
Andy Reid
Nnamdi Asomugha
Dominique Rodgers-Cromartie

If you're having trouble spending all of your Christmas bonus and find yourself with an extra $24,000 or so laying around, here's an idea: Pay Michael Vick to come over to your house ... bend over in front of him ... hike him a football ... and then write him a check. You do that, and all you've really done is imitate Eagles owner Jeffrey Lurie.

Assuming he is indeed finished playing for the Eagles, CSNPhilly.com's Reuben Frank tells us that Vick will end up being paid $35,500,000 of the $100 million contract he signed in August 2011. Considering that he took 1,474 snaps since then, that comes to $24,084 a snap. That may be tipping money to people named Vick, Cataldi and Barkann, but it sounds more like college tuition to us.

It is also three times as much as Vick made per snap in his first two seasons with the Eagles ($7,930 for each of 867 plays, including playoffs).

Below are how Vick's numbers for his first two years in South Philly compare with his last two. We particularly like his total TDs to turnover difference (plus-24 in 2009-10; minus-1 in 2011-12) and his passing TD percentage (which dropped off by two whole percentage points since signing the megacontract).

And below that are what Vick was seemingly paid over both those periods for some of the things he did on the football field. (How does $3.5 million per win over the last two seasons grab you? Or the nearly $500,000 earned for the 77-yard passing TD to DeSean Jackson, at $6,492 a yard, earlier this season?)

You read on while we go break open my daughters' piggy banks ... Those property taxes aren't going to pay themselves.

Some of the comments that you fans have posted about Vick sickens me. Now I realize why some fans say Eagles have racist fans. If you do not think Vick is a good player, that is totally fine. Anyone is free to make any opinion, but to say that he is a thug, he is going back to the hood, he is a convick, is totally out of line. C'mon, it is fans like that, that makes me not want to be an Eagles fan. The guy has been a total class act since he was released from prison. The guy could have thrown many people under the buss. Did he? No. The problems of the Eagles goes way beyond Vick. For the fans that think Foles is better than Vick better snap out of whatever dream they are in. Foles is not the same caliber is Vick. For the idiots like Jim35 and gdibig, we have been in many games this year and last year where we should have won, but the defense blew the lead. I don't see Foles bringing us back in the fourth quarter and he has played horrible defenses 3 out of the four games he played. When he played a decent defense in Washington, we scored 6 points. Do you fans realize he has two touchdown passes in four games, not to mention he has thrown 3 pics and fumbled six times?

I think you are one of the few TRUE Eagles fans. If people don't like Vick, then they can find a different team to support. No one is forcing them to like the Eagles.

well my last comment wasnt posted so here goes if we dont like vick we dont need to find another team we are not vick fans we are eagles fans. if you dont like the eagles and the fans for giving a felon a chance but due to his inability to perform he just aint cutting it then you need to find a new team to root for. maybe the next team that picks him up which i dont see how anyone will noone wanted him in the first place it took dungy to get him in here. root for rg3 find your self a new team i have no problems rooting for the birds with new qbs new coaches the eagles are my favorite team unlike you guys who root for a player...

Once the brutal thug is gone it just won't be the same watching the game, meaning cheering while he gets hit.

Mike, buy a structured annuity scheduled to pay you weekly for the next 50 years and don't give a second thought to the serendipitous arena of the NFL. Concussions are too dangerous to flirt with. Best wishes.

"bend over in front of him" who writes this garbage? And why the jealousy (hate)over how much Vick makes? He and other football players are on television every Sunday for 3.5 hours with an audience of millions, at least when he was playing. People on TV every weeek with guaranteed TV ratings make a LOT of Money. That's why athletes make so much, not because the owners are fools. i'm not defending Vick. these are just the facts. Remember Charlie Sheen made $1.5 million per episode of his TV show before he melted down. The so-called actors on "Friends" made one million each, per episode.. all because of TV ratings and advertising dollars.

I don't see how you can have a problem with calling him convick when he really is a convict. That’s not even a particularly harsh insult. I don't see how you can complain about calling someone who killed dogs a dog killer.

Seriously, you'll love and support and defend person who committed these disgusting acts. But you'll hate the people that remind of the things he did? Really? Is calling a dog killer a dog killer worse than being a dog killer? It's not like we're lying, you know, like Vick lied about being a dog killer until he couldn't possibly deny it any more. It's not like we're out there brutalizing dogs for fun like he did. But we're the bad people? We're the ones that make you not want to root for the Eagles? Not the guy who actually did those things?

Sure he went to prison. Prison doesn't undo what he did. And guess what, we didn't do anything that merited going to prison. Most of you Vick apologists probably haven't either. I'm sure most of you are far, far better people than Vick could ever dream of being, and yet, it's you looking up to and admiring him.

I've got no problem if someone wants to forgive and forget. I will not. I believe some things don't get forgiven, especially things done with intent. I don't judge your forgiveness, don't judge my lack thereof.

VERY WELL SAID....Let him move on and get out of our faces. Thinking about what he did to those defenseless animals and knowing he did it with a smile on his face is indefensible. The guy is trash and always will be trash...you are right some things arent foregivable. If you have that much violence and hatred in your sould it doesnt go away with just a few years behind bars..Trust me we will read about him again in the next 5 years and all these apologists will look foolish

What about the hatred in your heart towards him? 1 John 3:15 says:
"Everyone who hates his brother is a murderer, and you know that no murderer has eternal life abiding in him." So wat would that make you? Think about it...

Not to turn every story about wealthy athletes into a bigoted theme, but it's painfully obvious that some caucasian journalists (and sports fans) get upset when a person of color makes a (ton) more money than they do. hate on, haters.

About this blog

Boop – who goes by Bob Vetrone Jr. when he is undercover or paying bills – has been at the Daily News since 1982, after working for five years at the Philadelphia Bulletin up to its closing. Along with helping to build the sports scoreboards most nights, he has had great input into the papers’ special sports pullouts – March Madness, Broad Street Run, Record Breakers, Greatest Moments – as well as its day-to-day, award-winning event coverage.

A 1980 graduate of North Catholic, he took some evening college courses. Those lasted right up until the first conflict with a Big 5 doubleheader.

His favorite books growing up were the NBA Guide and the Baseball Encyclopedia, which was, for all intents and purposes, the Internet before there was an Internet.

He has been immersed in sports statistics since the early 70s, when his father (long-time sports writer, broadcaster and the Daily News’ Buck The Bartender), would take him into the Bulletin newsroom overnight in the summer and let him update the Phillies statistics in a little, black spiral notebook. But things have changed tremendously in the decades since … He now uses a big, black spiral notebook. Email him at boopstats@phillynews.com.
