Single Digits (May 14)

A half-dozen quick stats that caught our attention recently ...

♦ Chase Utley is ninth player in last 100 years to be hit by a pitch in four consecutive games ... Carlos Quentin (6 straight games, 2008) is the only one of those that went longer than four games ... See the list HERE.

♦ Cliff Lee Tuesday night became the first Phillies pitcher since Brett Myers in 2003 to lose a start in which he allowed 0 earned runs. It was the first such loss for Lee in his career ... Walter Johnson suffered at least 11 such losses ... Steve Carlton and Grover Alexander (maybe more) each had four for the Philles. (Data not available before 1914.)

♦ After Tuesday night's three miscues, Cody Asche is on a pace for 26.3 errors at third base this season ... Mike Schmidt had a career-high 27 errors at third base in 1980.

♦ During the Phillies-Angels series this week, there are four former regular season Most Valuable Players on the playing field: Ryan Howard, Jimmy Rollins, Albert Pujols and Josh Hamilton. Throw in Cole Hamels (who won't be pitching in the series) and David Freese (currently on the Angels' disabled list) and that is six players who have won a total of 13 regular season, LCS or World Series MVP Trophies.

♦ Tony Gwynn Jr. went 0-for-6 for the second time in his career (635 games) Sunday against the Mets. Tony Gwynn Sr. had just three 0-for-6s in his career (2,440 games), one of which was against the Mets and another against the Phillies ... By the way, Chris Gwynn (Tony Sr.'s brother and Tony Jr.'s uncle) never had an 0-for-6 in his major league career (599 games).

♦ Since June 3, 2013, Ryan Howard (6-4, 250) has as many triples (three) as Domonic Brown (6-5, 230).
