Single Digits (July 29)

Single Digits

A half-dozen quick stats that caught our attention recently ...

♦ Eagles guard Evan Mathis has been on the field for 120 of the Eagles' last 121 offensive touchdowns. In three years, he has missed one regular season game. In the other 47 games, he has missed a total of 11 plays (out of 3,109).

♦ Before New York's 7-1 win Monday at Citi Field, the home team had been 2-10 in the last 12 Phillies-Mets games.

♦ By the way, the Mets and Phillies were both 3-for-10 with runners in scoring position Monday. The Philles' three hits were an RBI double (Carlos Ruiz) and two singles with runners on first-and-second that loaded the bases. The three Mets' hits were an RBI single, a two-run double and a three-run homer.

♦ In four games since returning from the disabled list Ruiz' slash line is .500 / .556 / .750 with four doubles among his eight hits. He had been 0-for-19 (with 3 HBPs) in the six games before going on the DL with concussion symptoms.

♦ By the way, another Carlos Ruiz pitched against the Gulf Coast League Phillies Monday for the GCL Pirates. Neither is to be confused with the Carlos Ruiz who pitched for the Phillies' Helena affiliate in the Pioneer League (rookie) in 1981. That Ruiz was 2-0, 5.56 in 11 games, and was 0-for-11 at the plate. (Special thanks to the minor-league section of baseball-reference.com.)

♦ The Phillies' five minor league affiliates were outscored by 32-7 and outhit by 54-30 Monday night ... The big-league club lost by a half-dozen ... The franchise's highlight of the day was Williamsport being rained out.
