Single Digits

A half-dozen quick stats that caught our attention recently ...

♦ There were an even 400 flags thrown during Week 2 of the NFL preseason. That was up from the already-very-high 338 in Week 1.

♦ Brooklawn (N.J.) won the American Legion World Series with an 18-0 win over Midland (Mich.) Tuesday ... The Phillies and their four minor league affiliates that played that day (six games total) also scored 18 runs ... combined.

♦ In the 1971 Little League World Series, current Mariners manager Lloyd McClendon had a perfect OPS of 5.000. He had five walks and five home runs in 10 plate appearances for a 1.000/1.000/4.000 slash line. He also pitched in the series as his Gary, Ind., squad lost to Taiwan in the final.

♦ The Phillies are 16 games under .500 for the fifth time in the last two seasons. The last time were more games under .500 was the last day of the 2000 season, when they finished 32 games under.

♦ A.J. Burnett walked the first two Mariners of the game Tuesday on eight pitches. The last Phillies pitcher to do that was Danny Jackson in September 1993. Burnett was the first MLB pitcher to do that this season; no MLB hurler did it last year.

♦ Ryan Howard blasted a double Tuesday night off the Citizens Bank Park wall in left-center. It was his fifth two-base hit at CBP this season ... in 253 plate appearances.
