Jimmy Rollins has been stuck on 99 career triples since May 3. He has gone a career-high 82 games without a three-bagger.

In fact, since Sept. 19, 2010 — a span covering 138 games — Rollins has just one triple.

Rollins is shown above sliding into third with triple No. 97 last July to tie Richie Ashburn for fourth place on the Phils' all-time list. He is now four behind Sam Thompson (103) for third place.

Just watch him- he rarely runs hard to first base, It is time for him to go.

Maybe only running hard when he has to keeps him healthy. Why have an older player injure himself for no reason (other than showing how hard he can run). We NEED him at shortstop!!!! He steals when he has too and stretches singles into doubles when possible. Smart playing should not be misconstrued as "lazy".

recGUY - it's not "smart", it IS lazy, and he's been benched for it. And he's done it more than once this year.

recGUY, whether its injury, age or laziness, he is not a good baserunner anymore. you saying he stretches singles into doubles made me spit out my coffee. he never goes 1st to 3rd on a single, i mean ever, watch him. he also made a cardinal sin in last years playoffs but not scoring from first on a howard double with 2 out in a tight game. would have tilted the entire NLCS

You have to run hard to get a triple.

there are no cheap triples in major league baseball. You have to run all out from the time the ball leaves your bat. Rollins has next to no interest in doing that and, consequently, his days of hitting triples are all but done. I'm more concerned with his lack of interest in moving two or more bases on hits to the outfield. He cost Howard and Utley several RBI's each last season and a few more this season by never getting the proper jump off 2nd with less than two outs. I have to believe his teammates know this but no one expects Charlie to challenge him on it.

About this blog

Boop – who goes by Bob Vetrone Jr. when he is undercover or paying bills – has been at the Daily News since 1982, after working for five years at the Philadelphia Bulletin up to its closing. Along with helping to build the sports scoreboards most nights, he has had great input into the papers’ special sports pullouts – March Madness, Broad Street Run, Record Breakers, Greatest Moments – as well as its day-to-day, award-winning event coverage.

A 1980 graduate of North Catholic, he took some evening college courses. Those lasted right up until the first conflict with a Big 5 doubleheader.

His favorite books growing up were the NBA Guide and the Baseball Encyclopedia, which was, for all intents and purposes, the Internet before there was an Internet.

He has been immersed in sports statistics since the early 70s, when his father (long-time sports writer, broadcaster and the Daily News’ Buck The Bartender), would take him into the Bulletin newsroom overnight in the summer and let him update the Phillies statistics in a little, black spiral notebook. But things have changed tremendously in the decades since … He now uses a big, black spiral notebook. Email him at boopstats@phillynews.com.
