Mayberry Left in Right

POSTED: Tuesday, December 18, 2012, 3:44 AM

We hope that Ruben Amaro and the Phillies' front-office staff have another right-field card up their sleeve, but if they have to go with a Domonic Brown/John Mayberry platoon out there in 2013, let's hope its the 2009-11 Mayberry that shows up to face left-handed pitchers and not the 2012 version. His splits vs. LHP:

Soriano can NOT play RF. He is strictly a LF, which means bye bye Ruf if you trade for him. Revere better be as good a CF as the Phils think he is, because he's gonna have to cover a lot of ground regardless how the starting OF ends up shaking out.

Howard and Mayberry in the lineup at the same time is a disaster.

@Mark- what are your thoughts on Jeff Francoeur as a solution in RF. He is younger then both Ross and Swisher and markedly less expensive. His 2011 numbers were impressive, but he was mired in a bad slump in 2012. His arm easily is superior to Swisher and Ross, and more durable. He has power, speed on the bases, and defensively pretty equal to both Swisher and Ross and should be less expensive in dollars and personnel to get KC to part with him.

The way it now appears center field is sewed up. Left field could be Ruf, and right field will be filled by a tandem of "IFS".
IF Mayberry can hit lefthanders, and IF the anointed one of 5 talents, with 4 not yet surfacing can breathe, he'll be awarded the job. That really sounds like a recipe for success, doesn't it ?
It's time to move those two "IFS" and replace them with someone of major league calibre.

Mark - couldn't agree more on your take on Hairston, Swisher - and especially one Darin Ruf. Last year, I kept telling myself it was wishful thinking, but the similarities Ruf shares with the Bull are uncanny! Not just similar body style, but his total approach at the plate. He most certainly DOES have the focused, "see it, hit it" look in the batter's box. His swing looks like a righthanded version of the Utley swing - short, quick, powerful. As for right field, the only name that makes any sense now is Ross - and I'm not enthralled with that, either. SAMCRO - I know you were quoting Bobby Valentine with good intentions, but nothing from Valentine works for me.

So JMJ plays RF against lefties and Brown plays RF against righties. Tell us something we didn't know.

About this blog

Boop – who goes by Bob Vetrone Jr. when he is undercover or paying bills – has been at the Daily News since 1982, after working for five years at the Philadelphia Bulletin up to its closing. Along with helping to build the sports scoreboards most nights, he has had great input into the papers’ special sports pullouts – March Madness, Broad Street Run, Record Breakers, Greatest Moments – as well as its day-to-day, award-winning event coverage.

A 1980 graduate of North Catholic, he took some evening college courses. Those lasted right up until the first conflict with a Big 5 doubleheader.

His favorite books growing up were the NBA Guide and the Baseball Encyclopedia, which was, for all intents and purposes, the Internet before there was an Internet.

He has been immersed in sports statistics since the early 70s, when his father (long-time sports writer, broadcaster and the Daily News’ Buck The Bartender), would take him into the Bulletin newsroom overnight in the summer and let him update the Phillies statistics in a little, black spiral notebook. But things have changed tremendously in the decades since … He now uses a big, black spiral notebook. Email him at boopstats@phillynews.com.
