Mayberry Left in Right

POSTED: Tuesday, December 18, 2012, 3:44 AM

We hope that Ruben Amaro and the Phillies' front-office staff have another right-field card up their sleeve, but if they have to go with a Domonic Brown/John Mayberry platoon out there in 2013, let's hope its the 2009-11 Mayberry that shows up to face left-handed pitchers and not the 2012 version. His splits vs. LHP:

Lance Berkman is available on a one year deal to provide a switch hitting bat, steady a somewhat risky outfield, back up Howard against the occasional tough left handed pitcher and DH in interleague games. He's the Michael young type of solution for the outfield that costs no draft pick, no long term deals and no hefty price tag. Bet the Phils could sign him for $5 M or less and play him as a part timer unless he is fully healthy. He has a gimpy knee but apparently the problem was fixed through surgery. He could work out daily with Utley. Berkman wants to play for a contender.

Would love to have Berkman, but he has said he wants to be paid as a premier #3 hitter (10 Mil ?)...he also sounds like he would rather not leave his family in Texas...

in agreement with many that the price for Swisher, beginning with losing the high draft pick, is simply a NO-GO.

Worried along with @eman that the market has been drained to the point where Ross will cost more than he's worth and that any remaining FA's know the Phils are in a bit of a jam. Not a good scenario.

I'm concerned that if we do get Ross, or any righty swinger to play left or right, it will be Ruf that will be the odd man out, not Mayberry. Mayberry will be retained for his defense, not that it's so great, but because there are concerns about Ruf and Brown.

All of that said, I would much prefer that Darin Ruf be given a fair shot to nail down the job in left and give this team the power bat from the right side it desperately needs.

@candidly: Because we have a high payroll, contending team (at least, I think so) with players who expect Amaro to assemble a playoff-worthy roster. You enter a new season gambling on TWO full-time outfield positions at the same time. Even gambling on one is questionable. Swisher, Ross, Hairston have track records: If healthy, you know what to expect. They're different but all three of those guys produce and have power.

Brown and Ruf have potential but they do not have Major League track records. You don't trot out a rotation like ours, and a closer like ours, and hope for the best two from 2 of 7 position players. We did that with Mayberry in left last year -- lots of folks said start him and predicted big things -- and he basically flopped. It hurt us. Galvis was amazing in the field but didn't really produce at the plate, despite the PEDs. It hurt us. Etc.

Starting both Ruf and Brown full-time = saying we can't contend next year, so we might as well see what they can do. We have a contending team on paper.

Agree w EMan. Swallow hard, accept Ross. Or Hairston. We're talking about two OF spots --- really ... Revere has NOT been a full-time CFer, so this will be something new for him also. Let's shore up either RF or LF w a steady, proven guy in Ross or Hairston.

It's not secret when JMJ had a defined role he did pretty good. It's not secret that under Cholly and his young players don't develop. Last year, he as yo-yoed between 1B, LF, CF and the bench. That's a recipe for disaster for a young player. He has the tools, problem is, we have Cholly as a manager a not a LaRussa, Bochy or another smart manager, who brings the best of what they have.

Mayberry and Brown out....in a deal that sends Reuben with them....He destroyed this team with his bullpen and bad deals.....who else can he overpay for....REUBEN MUST GO...

@dwp....I am worried about Doc....if we don't see the mph back on his fastball in spring training, it's not coming back, and he will struggle along trying to get hitters out....my biggest fear is that he won't be able to take more than a few regular turns at a time in the rotation, before he needs a break. This is what happened at the end of Pedro Martinez' career and to a certain extent Roger Clemens and why he only signed in June of the last few years. He knew his arm and body wouldn't make it thru an entire season. The labored way that Doc has been throwing the last 18 months tells me the same thing.....

If Hairston came cheap <$4mil/per I'd take him, but he's never wanted to come to Philly before, so why now? Swisher is not worth the loss of a 1st rounder.....

@eman.....you have Ruf pegged waiting in the wings in AAA?......I think he's the starting LF and I'll bet you he keeps up the power numbers just as he showed in Sept and during winter ball. This kid has it figured out now and I don't think there's any moving backwards in him. Signing Ross for 2-3 years means you have a trade chip in DBrown for during the season if you need one, unless they are planning on a Ruf/Brown platoon in LF all season. But with the power numbers that Ruf can put up you don't usually platoon. What's important with all the FA's left is that they get regular playing time. None of them will come to Philly and sign if there is a possibility they'd lose their position and have to platoon. They will sign with a contender with whom they are promised a regular daily position/playing time.

Hell....I'd take Scott Hairston at this point. Give me someone, anyone, who can actually swing a bat. Damn.

'good clubhouse guy'. nu?? keep reading this here, but make no sense of it. sounds like a riff some clown of a journo came up with and ditto-mark posters regurgitate it. raise your hands: how many have actually been in a clubhouse? right, thought so. i have. lots. you can go a whole season with half the team never speaking a word to the other half in there. what you have in a clubhouse is a bunch of tiny cliques, like in a sorority house. unless a guy sneaks in from the dugout between innings and pinches wallets and watches, does anybody really think a clubhouse attitude has any significance so far as a won-loss record?

I remain concerned that the general manager appears to be, inter alia, clueless, see, e.g., warbiscuit, "amazing to read..." 12/17/2012; see also, transactions involving Philadepphia Phillies National League Baseball Club, 12/01/2008 through 12/18/2012...

@stantheman -- saw the joke already --you need more material...maybe you and "dogbsicuitthedope" need to go to a conference for rebuttals, rejoinders, putdowns, etc -- seems like everybody here is simply out...

Boop – who goes by Bob Vetrone Jr. when he is undercover or paying bills – has been at the Daily News since 1982, after working for five years at the Philadelphia Bulletin up to its closing. Along with helping to build the sports scoreboards most nights, he has had great input into the papers’ special sports pullouts – March Madness, Broad Street Run, Record Breakers, Greatest Moments – as well as its day-to-day, award-winning event coverage.

A 1980 graduate of North Catholic, he took some evening college courses. Those lasted right up until the first conflict with a Big 5 doubleheader.

His favorite books growing up were the NBA Guide and the Baseball Encyclopedia, which was, for all intents and purposes, the Internet before there was an Internet.

He has been immersed in sports statistics since the early 70s, when his father (long-time sports writer, broadcaster and the Daily News’ Buck The Bartender), would take him into the Bulletin newsroom overnight in the summer and let him update the Phillies statistics in a little, black spiral notebook. But things have changed tremendously in the decades since … He now uses a big, black spiral notebook. Email him at boopstats@phillynews.com.
