Mayberry Left in Right

POSTED: Tuesday, December 18, 2012, 3:44 AM

We hope that Ruben Amaro and the Phillies' front-office staff have another right-field card up their sleeve, but if they have to go with a Domonic Brown/John Mayberry platoon out there in 2013, let's hope its the 2009-11 Mayberry that shows up to face left-handed pitchers and not the 2012 version. His splits vs. LHP:

@monsiuer....agreed, it will have to be done. I think we can expect reasonable output from Utley and Howard this season, but I have serious reservations about Halladay from a medical standpoint. The last thing this team needs physically and psychologically is Halladay doing his best Blanton impersonation at 9W-10L with a 4.87era. It can affect the psyche of the whole club. As much as Lee and Hamels can be #1's, Halladay has been a #1 for so long, it's a whole different level of respect/expectations.

No JMJ and DEFINITELY no Sori. Find a way to get Cuddyher.

JMJ while not a GG is perfectly adequate defensively and against lefties offensively. Cuddyer is no better. Soriano has the edge offensively on both but you gotta wonder about his clubhouse presence and his "D" is bar far one of the worst around. I'd have to be very desperate to bring him in. Maybe they wait til May to see what they have working in the OF before making a move?

Aren't we desperate though? We've got an old core that's way past their prime. I look at it like we owe it to guys like Doc and Chase to make another run at it. Soriano had a huge year offensively and we really need that type of right handed pop. Worse case scenario is it doesn't work and you trade him next yr when he'll only have a very tradeable 1yr left on his contract. I know his defense is bad, but it wasn't terrible last year. It's not like we have a huge outfield at CBP, he won't be asked to cover a ton of ground and can be replaced after the 7th if we have a lead. Time is running out on this group, might as well get the best right handed hitter you can and just roll with it.

The Phils need a guy that KILLS left handed pitching. A reasonably priced alternative could be Scott Hairston.

@maury....for whatever reason, Hairston has always rebuffed the Phils efforts to sign him. He's always chosen to go back to the Mets rather than to a winner. Go figure. At this point in their careers, I don't know that theres much difference in their hitting LH pitching between JMJ and Hairston, plus JMJ can steal you a few more bags and score on a double from first easier..

Perhaps the new hitting instructor mentality will be of value to JMJ and DB allowing the platoon. But personally, I'd never put Dom in for defense in the late innings.

I've been saying the Phils will be 72-90 in 2013.

    Perhaps I was being optimistic.

They'll have the lowest batting average in the majors.

Mark - thanks for weighing in on Doc - it IS the elephant in the room this winter. That shoulder of his - no matter how hard he preps, is his weakest link. It's sad, but nonetheless a fact we have seen the best of Mr. Halladay. And THAT, my friend, will be a big issue come spring training. 'Cause you know, the very first time he gets beat up on the mound, "they" will be screaming. I believe Kyle Kendrick has turned a corner in his career and is now the real deal. easing the burden of expectation on one John Lannan. The significance of the pickup of Mike Adams cannot be overstated - pending of course, a plus recovery on his part. The bullpen is going to be one of the Phillies strengths in 2013.

It is very simple to me. Either we go for it or mess around with retreads. Hope they pull a Toronto. There is only 1 rightfielder for us. Iwould trade the house for him. ( frandsen or sanchez 1, their pick of any 2 outfielders we got (hopefully not ruff) thats 3 players, plus any 2 relievers we got thats five players and their pick of 2 minor leaguers we got that's 7 players they cn't refuse that deal all
those guys for the man they used to call Mike. We become condenters now
and we can live with it and ar under the cap, DO IT AMARO

This team needs Nick Swisher. He hits for power, is a decent clubhouse guy, works opposing pitchers, and is a winner. Maybe he can get JStroll to run hard to first base ... b/c Manuel and Rube-the-Boob can't seem to do it

Swisher would cost them a high #1 pick, it doesn't make any sense to do that for Swisher. Mayberry didn't look real good in CF, but he is a solid corner OF option in a platoon with say, Brown or Nix. I think they should see if Ruf keeps mashing, he would solve all the issues about RH power at a very minimal cost. Other teams will have young players emerge in the Spring, too...there may be a guy who becomes available when that happens. If the current guys are not producing by the trade deadline, get somebody who is going to be a free agent in a trade. The other thing that could happen is the Yankees might unload Granderson and pay most of his remaining deal, and the same could happen with Wells in LA.

    1. Mayberry is arbitration eligible in 2014. Presuming he has another weak year, he'll still be affordable then -- but this could well be the last year for JMJ.
    2. Sure seems like Amaro is unwilling to lose a draft pick for Swisher; we're not prominent in any Swisher reports.
    3. Unfortunately, that means Cody Ross and his agent know how much the Phils covet him -- maybe more than he's worth.
    4. Hairston is a more affordable option. He plays all three OF positions and has the better glove.
    5. Final point: Hairston/Brown in right and Mayberry/Nix in left, with Ruf waiting in the wings at AAA, presuming he does OK there. It's not a bad lineup, considering it does ride on Utley-Howard-and-Halladay and a non drug-using Ruiz being close to 2012 form. 2013 season record: 85-77.

If the Phillies are expecting Ruf and Brown to become good everyday players, why would you want to sign an older outfielder to two or more year contract ?

Play the hand you have and show some confidence in the players you are expecting to come through - Ruf and Brown. Mayberry can back up all outfield positions and 1st base and be a defensive replacement in late innings.

He has been immersed in sports statistics since the early 70s, when his father (long-time sports writer, broadcaster and the Daily News’ Buck The Bartender), would take him into the Bulletin newsroom overnight in the summer and let him update the Phillies statistics in a little, black spiral notebook.
