Eye Openers: Great Openings

BoopStats Eye Openers for June 14

♦ Through five games of the NHL Finals, the Bruins and Canucks had played 100 minutes of first-period hockey and had scored a grand total of two goals. Boston scored four goals in a span of four minutes and 14 seconds in Game 6's opening stanza Monday.

♦ How cool is it that even before he registered his first PGA victory this past weekend — in his 355th tour event (at the Saint Jude Classic, no less) — Harrison Frazar was scheduled to be among the first group to tee off at Thursday's first round of the U.S. Open at Congressional? He is slated to depart from the 10th tee at 7 a.m. along with Chad Campbell and Marc Turnesa. Saint Jude, by the way, is the patron Saint of Lost Causes. There is no official Saint of Lost Golf Balls. We have checked many, many times.

♦ In our minds, the Triple Crown is not over until the last of the money is won (or in most of our cases, lost). For the third time in four years, no one hit the Pick 6 on Belmont Stakes Day card. So there is a carryover of over $1 million for the track's next racing scheduled day, which is Wednesday. All you have to do is pick the winner in each of six consecutive races. Kid's stuff!
