Drexel Trying to Tie One On

Saturday morning, Drexel will be trying to tie a school record in going for its 15th consecutive win in a Bracket Busters game at Cleveland State.

How important is the game? Consider that 15 of the 16 city teams that have put together a 15-game winning streak in a single season since the NCAA Tournament began (see below), has reached the four-letter dance. And the only team of those 16 that did not reach it, was ineligible.

After Saturday, Drexel has two conference games before the CAA Tournament begins. Winning both of them would give the Dragons the seventh longest streak in the city's modern history.

Notable: Penn had three long winning streaks in the early 20th century: 22 in 1907-08, 19 in 1919-20, and 16 in 1921-22 ... Villanova's longest one-season win streak is 13, done twice (1937-38 and 1963-64) ... Longest win streak for the two NCAA title teams — 1953-54 La Salle: 11 games; 1984-85 Villanova: 7 games.

About this blog

Boop – who goes by Bob Vetrone Jr. when he is undercover or paying bills – has been at the Daily News since 1982, after working for five years at the Philadelphia Bulletin up to its closing. Along with helping to build the sports scoreboards most nights, he has had great input into the papers’ special sports pullouts – March Madness, Broad Street Run, Record Breakers, Greatest Moments – as well as its day-to-day, award-winning event coverage.

A 1980 graduate of North Catholic, he took some evening college courses. Those lasted right up until the first conflict with a Big 5 doubleheader.

His favorite books growing up were the NBA Guide and the Baseball Encyclopedia, which was, for all intents and purposes, the Internet before there was an Internet.

He has been immersed in sports statistics since the early 70s, when his father (long-time sports writer, broadcaster and the Daily News’ Buck The Bartender), would take him into the Bulletin newsroom overnight in the summer and let him update the Phillies statistics in a little, black spiral notebook. But things have changed tremendously in the decades since … He now uses a big, black spiral notebook.
