The Eagles' Defense Leads the NFL in ...

POSTED: Friday, November 16, 2012, 2:29 AM

The Eagles are the only team in the NFL that has not allowed an opposing player to rush for 100 or more yards this season.

Sure, that is more reaching than I will do over the Thanksgiving dinner table Thursday ... but if you have watched this defense perform this season — especially over the last couple of weeks — you can understand that we'll take any positive stat we can.

So ... once again for effect ... There have been 70 100-yard rushing performances in 2012, and the Eagles have not surrendered a one of them.

On the other hand, the Redskins have notched four of those 70, three by running back Alfred Morris, another by rookie quarterback Robert Griffin III.

Here are the Eagles' opponents' leading rusher for each game so far this season:

Gm.   Opponent   Leading Rusher  Att.   Yds.   Avg.   LG     TD
  1  Browns  Trent Richardson  19  39  2.1     9   0
  2  Ravens  Ray Rice  16  99  6.2   43  0
  3  Cardinals  Ryan Williams  13  83  6.4   25  0
  4  Giants  Ahmad Bradshaw  13  39  3.0     9  0
  5  Steelers  Rashard Mendenhall   13  68  5.2   17  0
  6  Lions  Mikel Leshoure  15  70  4.7   14  0
  7  Falcons  Jacquizz Rodgers    8  60  7.5   43  0
  8  Saints  Chris Ivory  10  48  4.8  t22  1
  9  Cowboys  Felix Jones  16  71  4.4   15  0

Great! But you forgot to mention that the Eagles also lead the league in stinking up stadiums!

A single runner may not have topped 100 yards against the Eagles D, but the a team, with the starter and backup and quarterback combined have topped 100 yards against this awful defense. Against the pass we are even worse, with the most over rated corner in the league, Namdi A, leading the way!

Honestly, what is the point? This defense lacks in every area of the game. They don't rush the passer, they certainly don't hit and intimidate anyone. Other teams haven't had one back 'run it up' on them because they haven't needed to.

Note that none of these backs got 20 carries and all of them except for two averaged 4.4 ypc minimum and one of those was a rookie playing his first game. Plus only one of them is a top back - Ray Rice - and he only got 99. On average these terrible backs above got 4.69 ypc. That's awful.

ray rice would have had close to 200, but harbaugh stopped running for whatever reason.

its a pretty bad stat, because other teams just gave the ball to other backs, not just one. Because while they havent given up a 100 yard rusher alone, they have given up over 100 yards to the other team almost over game this season. They have given up 99 yards or more in 8 out of 9 games, and over 100 yards given up during every one of the last 5 games, in which they are 0-5. I consider 99 yards about 100, and in that case they have only NOT allowed 100 yards in ONE GAME ALL YEAR. THAT IS ABYSMAL. WHO ELSE WILL GET FIRED, PROBABLY MORE THEN JUAN GUY WITH NUMBERS LIKE THAT. DREAM TEAM 2012, NOT ALLOWING ONE GUY TO GET 100 YARDS, JUST THE WHOLE TEAM.

The reason the Eagles have not allowed opposing running backs to go over 100 yards in a single game is that it is very easy for opposing teams to pass against the Eagles (there is no pass rush and the secondary stinks) so there is really no reason for opposing teams to use the run very much.

Also forgot to mention how teams are right down the field with the passing attack. I would like to see Nnamdi's catches allowed for the year. I know for that falcons game if he had an average contract he would have been cut.

Top half in yards allowed, bottom half in points allowed. Turnovers lead to short field.

    Obviously a meaningless stat.

Even with this pointless stat, the Eagles are still 14th in the league in run defense.

If you look at a battery of stats relating to the running game, you'll see the Iggs are above average against the run, and against the pass. The problem is that they aren't getting the big plays, especially turnovers. Unless you have an overwhelmingly dominant defense, offenses are too good to get repeated stops without coming up with big plays.

Ray Rice one yard shy of 100, so lets not get ahead of ourselves. Not helping me want to actually watch a game.

    Unfortunately, they're 23rd in wins.

Boop – who goes by Bob Vetrone Jr. when he is undercover or paying bills – has been at the Daily News since 1982, after working for five years at the Philadelphia Bulletin up to its closing. Along with helping to build the sports scoreboards most nights, he has had great input into the papers’ special sports pullouts – March Madness, Broad Street Run, Record Breakers, Greatest Moments – as well as its day-to-day, award-winning event coverage.

A 1980 graduate of North Catholic, he took some evening college courses. Those lasted right up until the first conflict with a Big 5 doubleheader.

His favorite books growing up were the NBA Guide and the Baseball Encyclopedia, which was, for all intents and purposes, the Internet before there was an Internet.

He has been immersed in sports statistics since the early 70s, when his father (long-time sports writer, broadcaster and the Daily News’ Buck The Bartender), would take him into the Bulletin newsroom overnight in the summer and let him update the Phillies statistics in a little, black spiral notebook. But things have changed tremendously in the decades since … He now uses a big, black spiral notebook. Email him at boopstats@phillynews.com.
