Eagles: A Boldin Opportunity

As soon as we have a staff meeting at NovaCare, the entire PP infrastructure will begin blogging the draft this afternoon. Mostly this will entail making fun of Mel Kiper and the Detroit Lions, but there will also be the always entertaining what-nonsense-is-being-said-in-the-press-room? You won't want to miss that.
Here's a final plea for the Eagles to make a trade to acquire Cardinals' receiver Anquan Boldin. If the latest rumors are to be believed -- and, remember, some of these are Sal-related -- the Cards are having a fire sale now, dropping the top end of the trade requirement from a first-round pick to a second-round pick.
"We just want to make a trade that does us justice," the Arizona GM might have said.
And the Eagles might have replied, "You want Justice? Have we got a deal for you."
The sticking point about getting Boldin, in all likelihood, is not the draft picks or players it would require to land him, but the $10 million per season he wants in salary upon being acquired. That's what would give teams pause, particularly ones like the Eagles who have already shelled out big bucks this offseason.
Well, what of it? They've got it, and making the deal for Boldin should be a no-brainer. Even if the price is still a first-rounder-plus, I would grab this opportunity.
Let's do a what-if. What if the Cards would trade Boldin for a second-round pick, a fourth-round pick and the right to swap this year's 31st pick for the 21st pick held by the Eagles? Would you do that? I think the Eagles would. The Birds would get the high-octane receiver they need and they would also get a decent player in the draft (and one they wouldn't have to pay as much).
OK, that's it. Final Plea. Next up on the clock: Quesadillas.
- No , its not a no-brainer for a first-rounder plus. For a second rounder by itself, sure (or maybe a 3d and a 4th), but not a first or even second rounder plus something els for the opportunity to pay someone 10 mil a year, at a position thats does not even present a pressing need.

Mr. Prosecutor, I object. Maybe we just see it differently, but Boldin is a proven commodity in the NFL, a star, and the potential draft picks are far from that. And we might differ on how pressing the need for a top WR is, too. As for the money, let's have them spend it for a change. Bob Ford- I would love to have Burgess back. I still think they never should have let him go. They have been looking for that other defensive end every since albertpa
keep dreaming! losteagle
The Eagles probably don't know if they can do this yet. If Moreno is there, they stay put and pick him. If he goes, I don't think they'll spend 21 on Pettigrew. Then we have to see if anyone (best player on the board) fell i.e. Maclin, Ayers, CB. Send Reggie Brown and a 2nd rounder to AZ for Boldin. Can't use anything less than a 3rd rounder on tight end this year. Maybe they can move up with some remaining picks and get Eric Wood yet. Yes, I said it, another O Lineman..very good center. Throw in a Wide receiver with speed to develop and return kicks late Sunday and it was an excellent weekend. MidGreen
Bob- we don't even have a forth rounder. Please shut up. christopherkmaddaloni

I beleive that the window of opportunity for a Super Bowl is closing, with that being said i say do the deal for Bolden... Ruiz the Great
I wouldn't do Ford's trade...it's too much. Get the running back in the first round, then see if Boldin is available for a second. If Knowshon is not available at 21, then consider trading down and get the kid from UConn. amblereagles
It's not a no-brainer at all, and I guarantee the cardinals haven't dropped their asking price to a second round pick. It sounds like reporter speculation in the hopes of stirring up the fans. Fritz and Alice
christopher, you are the moron. eagles have 1 4th round pick. (121 overall). ralphj- As strange as this may sound, money may not be as big of an issue this time around. Not only because the Eagles have some, but the Eagles HAVE to get to the salary cap FLOOR, which is about 85% of the salary cap ceiling. And if the Eagles are as much under the cap ceiling as we hear, they should also be under the floor (not sure by how much). Which means, it is a league rule that they MUST spend the money to get to the floor. I would guess that they'd be willing to pay a lot for a 1st round pick, or for Boldin or another non-current Eagle player than redo contracts of current Eagles. Because we know how the Eagles feel about redoing contracts. Stay tuned. Something HAS to happen. They need to spend the money. awl
- The Birds would do better to trade up to get Moreno from Georgia to complement Westbrook in the running game. This obsession about getting a superstar WR is ridiculous. The Eagles receivers are solid. The problem is that the current QB--McNabb--can't hit them with any consistency, so you could have God as a WR and it wouldn't matter. The problem is McNabb and Reid's defective offensive philosophy, not the recievers. Tomme
I don't need to read this article to understand what it underscores. ...another know-nothing reporter offering his uneducated opinion on what a team should do. Tell me Mr Ford - how much will the $9 million that Boldin is commanding impact the Eagles salary cap? ...what is the impact of this going into a 2010 season without a cap? Highly unlikely these questions are addressed in this article. MudinyourEye
