Charles Barkley was at the Chicago-Green Bay NFL game in Soldier Field on Sunday, because, well, because when you're Charles Barkley you can do that kind of thing if you like. He was trim(mer) than usual, said he had lost about 40 pounds, and stopped me in the hallway outside the press box to ask a pertinent question.
"Why is Doug Collins trying to win games?" Barkley said. "That's stupid. They should develop the young guys and try to get a better draft pick."
Barkley said he didn't mind being quoted -- duh -- so I'm passing that along for what it's worth.

When Phillies GM Ruben Amaro Jr. decided to sign Cliff Lee this offseason, was he admitting he made a mistake trading him in the first place?

All right. You are Jim L. Mora (never Junior; dad is Jim E. Mora) and it is apparent you were able to choose among at least a couple of options for a new defensive coordinator job.
Let's say it came down to a choice between Denver and Philadelphia as you re-enter the job market following unsuccessful stints as head coach in Atlanta and Seattle.
The Eagles are a playoff team -- sort of -- a team that could have easily won 11 games. The Eagles have an exciting offense and a defense, if you accept the spin, that merely needs a little good health and a little fine-tuning to return to prominence.

The guys who identify talent for professional football teams and put their suggestions in front of the head coach and general manager are not the guys who get their names on the covers of magazines.
They are the guys, however, who get their teams on the covers of magazines.
Whether the players are found at the NFL Scouting Combine or on film of their college careers, or on flashes they show with other team, the assessment of those players is what makes the real difference in organizations.

Fortunately, we're only a few hours from kickoff now and all the blah-blah that attends the anticipation of a big football game is just about complete.
(I say that as part of the blah-blah providers, a job we take very seriously while pretending that it all means something.)
There were a lot of blah-blah providers around the country who gave NFL fans chapter and verse on why the Seattle Seahawks shouldn't be in the playoffs and why the Seahawks would be embarrassed in the wild-card round against the Saints.

Just finished a column for Sunday's paper about the match-up with the Packers. Part of the story deals with the 12-year history of Andy Reid in the postseason and with his place in coaching history.
I'm going to post this to hopefully prevent some needless e-mail on Sunday morning from readers who -- not you guys, naturally, other guys -- don't necessarily read all that carefully.
There are a bunch of statistical points to be made about Reid's head coaching career, most of them positive, but there is also this, quoting one passage of the column:
