Adam Eaton Joke of the Day

Driving into Baltimore for the Preakness, the sports-talk radio station announcer delivered a perfect summation of the problem with Adam Eaton.

There are several other problems, of course, most of which have to do with Eaton's inability to retire major-league hitters -- something Phillies' fans are well aware of -- but radio guy Marc Unger really captured the issue.

He captured it on the heels of a 10-hit, 7-earned run outing for Eaton that boosted his already plump earned run average to 7.93 for the season.

"You know," Unger said, "this guy shouldn't have sideburns. I mean, who is he to have 'a look?' You've got to be able to pitch before you're allowed to have 'a look.'"

Precisely.

As for the Preakness, Jensen hasn't gotten here yet, so I don't have any actual, like, information, to pass along, but the weather is dank and overcast and racing began at 10:15 this morning.

Many hours before the actual race, I am most intrigued by the possibilities of a horse named Take The Points, which has never finished in the money in a Grade I stakes. When Jensen arrives, he will talk me out of this infatuation, but, just for the record, it's a horse that can be used. Does have a career win on a muddy track, by the way, and Pimlico might well be damp by the 12th race.

WEATHER UPDATE!!!! Sunshine @ 4:15. Track should be fast.

Great observation. But 24 million buys the rights to have sideburns

I have never understood the hatred of Eaton. We all knew he stunk before the Phillies signed him. I am sure that Eaton was well aware of his stankitude too. But it was the Phillies who offered him 24 million dollars. He would have been a fool not to take it. And you can complain about his work ethic and all that, but you can't polish a turd. Who here has ever turned down a job because they were offering you too much money, and you felt like were not qualified for it?

Shame on the Major League teams who keep giving this guy money. I'm no scout, but what am I missing?

Great point, AreaMan. He had AVERAGE stats before the Phils signed him. He made about $4 mill the year before they signed him. Why the heck did they double his salary. Maybe a 1 year $4 mill with an option. You cant fault the Orioles. Signing any player to a one year 400k contract is never a bad deal...

1adam, the Phils are on the hook for his around $8 mill this season, less the major league minimum the O's are paying him. Last year of his deal any of us would have taken. The O's are horrible, have no pitching to speak of and the guy can eat some innings while giving up a multitude of runs. There are almost 1500 innings a team's gotta be able to pitch in a major league season so someone's gotta do 'em regardless of team ERA. Hey, zwarte, when you don't see your post and there is a 'view all by latest' button at the top of the blog, that will show it to you. No idea otherwise which/how many get right under the article by default.

If I was Adam Eaton, my "look" would be enhanced by a smile that would rival Batman's 'Joker'.

Maybe this has been posted, but I think this is a better Adam Eaton joke. I trust that all you Phillies fans are aware that Jose Mesa translated means Joe Table. Do you know what Chan Ho Park means translated? Adam Eaton.

Bob, you call yourself a writer. You are just like the guy on talk radio. You complain about someone and look for peoples remarks. Try writing something for a change.

Fred, this is a blog post, not an article, so I don't understand your complaint.

I recall Lohse being offered a serious 3 year contract by the Phils, turned down by an agent that we all love to hate. He then was signed by the Cards to a one year deal. The rest is history.

Don't forget that the goggles are a part of his look also. Whenever the Phils clinched anything, he was the first one to pop the champagne corks. Guy can't pitch, but he sure knows how to party.

Adam was pretty good for a few years, but now it is obvious... I think he should retire... He's not embarrassed though with all those million dollar checks coming in, I wouldn't be either! :)
