GLENDALE, Ariz. -- The Arizona Cardinals are in the Super Bowl. It doesn't matter how many times you say it or write it, that doesn't seem to make a lot of sense.

Still, that will be the case when the game is played Feb. 1, and the Eagles, who were good enough to prevent that, didn't finish the job.

They dug a hole, climbed out and then, at the point in the script when Kurt Warner was supposed to throw an interception that Asante Samuel returned for a touchdown to clinch the 32-24 win, their defense stumbled and their offense came up short. Instead, it became a very strange 32-25 loss.

You can pick apart each play, wonder why Rod Hood wasn't called for pass interference, wonder why David Akers developed a case of the shanks at the worst possible time, wonder why the Eagles were suckered by a gadget play to the most dangerous player on the field.

All of that is worth examining, but none of it matters now. Next season will arrive, and it will arrive with Andy Reid as coach and Donovan McNabb as quarterback, and everything will be the same. The snowdrift of disappointment will be a little higher, maybe a lot higher, but the landscape beneath it is unaltered.

Was this a good season? If you get to the league's equivalent of the Final Four, it has to be considered a good season. Twenty-eight other teams would certainly think so.

But, as I said in the column filed after the game, the Eagles might come away from this season more popular with their fans if they had lost the week before to the Giants -- if the game was well-played and they went out with their heads held high. Losing to the Cardinals, on the doorstep of the Super Bowl, doesn't feel that way.

This was an awful loss. It might have been even more painful than the NFC title loss to the Bucs, the final game in the Vet. Time will have to tell that story, though. The story at the moment is that the Arizona Cardinals are in the Super Bowl and the team that should have prevented that came up small when it counted.

It's a little hard to believe, isn't it?

From a new Cardinals fan in Arizona to the fans of Philly: I thought your team showed amazing toughness and heart coming back like they did especially in the thrid quarter. The coaching adjustments made were exactly the right ones. Irrespective of what many I've read on this board think of McNabb, I think the guy great. This loss wasn't his fault. You've got to remember one thing EVERYONE from the beginning the playoffs has predicted the Cards to get beat in each game. Therefore they come in loose with nothing to lose and everything to gain; no pressure. They can play for the fun of the game. The Eagles are a tremendous team and I'd bet they'll be back in the championship game next year, plus your cheerleaders are seriously hot...Thanks for the great game...Good luck next year

"..more painful than the NFC title loss to the Bucs" Aw come on Ford...get a grip. This one was no where near as bad...The Eagles show some a ton of heart today. In '03 they mailed it in. Thanks Eagles for a lot of unexpected fun over the past month!

Then again, no one will give the Cardinals a chance in the SB. That's not such a bad position to be in. It'll be interesting to see how the Steelers handle Fitzgerald. No one else this postseason has come close to covering him.

We beat the Steelers, Dallas, Giants twice ... we'll be back! Eagles were in the final 4 this season ... we'll improve some key positions and I will wear Eagles Green proudly in '09 ! Highs and lows the team faced in '08 must be ironed out ...

The defense came out flat and apparently unprepared. Incredibly the Eagles came back to take the lead, but when the defense had to make a stand they didn't. Give the Cards some credit. McNabb is a great quarterback; however, he's not the guy you want leading your team in the last 2 minutes with your back up against the wall. That last drive was futile. That being said, those who want to get rid of McNabb and Reid, have a backup plan, before you start blowing things up. Be careful what you wish for. We are very fortunate to have had some very good Eagles teams the past decade, but they just haven't been good enough to be great. Another long off-season awaits. Curtis had some great catches AND he dropped one when it really counted. Demps had the bonehead roughing the passer which assisted the Cards in getting downfield for the FG at the end of the 1st half. Akers had perhaps the worst game of his career.

The Beagles were overated frauds (once again), def not a SB caliber team. McGag and Jumbo Reid have to go, their window is sealed shut. Plus, the bogus, ahole Philly fans once again get what they deserve....
