Wolf is crushing Corbett, Quinnipiac Poll says

Pennsylvania Gov. Tom Corbett would lose by a landslide if the election were held today, according to a new poll of likely voters released Thursday.

Democrat Tom Wolf has a commanding 24-point lead over Gov. Tom Corbett (R) among likely Pennsylvania voters with a little more than seven weeks until the election, according to a Quinnipiac University poll released Thursday.

Fifty-nine percent back Wolf, to 35 percent for Corbett, the poll finds, with huge majorities saying the Democrat would better handle the top two issues facing the state, the economy and education.

Wolf leads 91 percent to 7 percent among Democrats and 53 percent to 39 percent among independents. Just 66 percent of Republicans say they back Corbett, to 28 percent who oppose him.

"A stunningly bad showing for Pennsylvania Gov. Tom Corbett who is clobbered across the board on issues, leadership and other character traits by a candidate who was unknown to most voters earlier this year," said Tim Malloy, assistant director of the Quinnipiac University Poll.

From September 3 – 8, Quinnipiac University surveyed 1,161 voters who said they were likely to go to the polls Nov. 4. Live interviewers called land lines and cell phones, and results are subject to a margin of error of plus or minus 2.9 percentage points.

More to come.
