You can’t make up the strange coincidences in politics.
Former Pennsylvania Sen. Rick Santorum, one of the nation’s leading social-issues conservatives, Wednesday announced a committee to explore a campaign for the GOP presidential nomination with an eloquent and stirring slogan sent to supporters and emblazoned on his website: “Fighting to make America America again.”
Turns out that the phrase echoes the title of a militantly pro-union, pro-immigrant poem written by Langston Hughes – “Let America Be America again.” And as the leftist website ThinkProgress, which first noted the slogan’s similarity to the poem, delights in pointing out, Hughes was an early proponent of gay rights. Santorum is prominent in the movement to prevent government sanction of same-sex marriage.
“O, let America be America again –
The land that never has been yet –
And must be – the land where every man is free.”
Here is the original Think Progress post, which includes a link to a Hughes poem decrying a long-ago police raid on a gay bar.
