Pro-Romney super PACs make late Pa. ad push
Thomas Fitzgerald, Inquirer Politics Writer
(Updated) Two Republican super PACs apparently are making a late play for Pennsylvania, placing a $3.2 million buy for airtime across the state in support of Mitt Romney.
Restore Our Future, the super PAC founded and financed by loyal former Romney staffers and donors, plans to spend $2.1 million for the last week of the campaign starting Tuesday, including in the expensive Philadelphia media market.
That’s on top of the $1.1 million already committed by Americans for Job Security, a conservative GOP super PAC that has aired ads around the nation attacking President Obama and backing Romney for president and Republican candidates for Congress.
Obama campaign manager Jim Messina said in a conference call with reporters Monday that it would respond in kind to the ROF buy in Pennsylvania.
"We’re not gonna take anything for granted and make sure we’re doing what we need to do on the ground," Messina said. "We’re (also) gonna go up in pa. They understand they’re not gonna be able to win ohio, so now they’re getting desperate."
Republican private polling shows Pennsylvania is within reach, though independent polls, including one over the weekend by The Philadelphia Inquirer, show a slightly larger lead for Obama of an average of 5 percentage points.
Neither presidential campaign is itself advertising on Pennsylvania broadcast, and the president and Romney have not visited the state much either.
In a state-of-the-race memo, Bill Hyers, Pennsylvania director for the Obama campaign, said that it has a more extensive and finely tuned "ground game" to turn out supporters than the Romney campaign does. In addition, he wrote, Obama benefits from the large Democratic voter-registration advantage in the state.
"Over the last three months alone, 47,440 African-Americans, 17,908 Latinos, 187,986 people under age 35 and 115,170 women have registered to vote in Pennsylvania – all groups among whom Obama leads Romney overwhelmingly," Hyers wrote.
Here's another idea: Do your homework. Pick the one you think is the best. I think sometimes its best to represent ideas visually. There's this great website called BudgetControl.com that allows citizens to balance the budget with an interactive pie chart. So if you want to cut defense spending..go ahead! If you want to increase money to education, do it! It'll tell you your deficit depending on what you do. You can also see the various proposals out there in Congress, including various Budget Plans (such as Romneys and Ryans budget plans), and see the effect of them over the years. Then you can share it with representatives, friends and families! It definitely helped me get a better eye for the U.S. budget (since there are so many nooks and crannies to the budget).I suggest you do it. It's a non partisan free website, and honestly, what do you have to lose? You'll just gain a little more traction on your opinion. (HTML deleted) jbarroso
African-Americans and Latinos probably know their own interests. As do women. The House panel on reproductive law and health insurance -- without a single woman on it! -- sent me off to make a donation to some good women candidates. There have been some admirable, independent-minded Republican women in Congress, like Olympia Snowe of Maine, who voted for the health care bill, and was savaged by her own party. philapat
Nate Silver has Obama with a 94.2% chance of winning PA as of this morning. While I think predicting the future is always a risky business, he seems to be the best there is, and actually applies some statistical and scientific rigor to his predictions. carl and sons
Yeah, and I heard that Obama has women in binders, too. Falls Ed
Obama has done noting to help African Americans or Latinos find work. In fact, unemployment for both of those groups has gone up. Why would newly registered voters in those groups give their votes to Obama. If they did, they'd be voting against their own interests and their future. The whole idea of identity politics, in which the Democrats claim ownership of black, Latino, and women voters is irrational. What has the Democrat party and Obama done for those groups to have earned their vote? Surely, they haven't helped them get jobs, which has to be item one for everyone. Frankie75
Please join us in voting Romney-Ryan and Tom Smith if you value all of your First Amendment Free Speech Rights.
With the thinking of our present Democrat rulers, they are just beginning their silencing Americans by silencing them around their Religion being active and effective in the public square.
If the Democrat rulers succeed in what they plan for Religion,it is only a matter of time and technique until ideas and voices are snuffed out opposing the Democrat Line in other areas and formats.
They must be repudiated at this stage.
Romney-Ryan and PA Republican for US Senate,Tom Smith are our only First Amendment Defenders this time.
Please vote for them, if you value your voice to be free to be heard.
For first they go after the Catholics, then they go after you! penllynjohn
Tony, Nate Silver and Intrade were the most accurate in 2008 but I'm not qouting either of them, I'm using the average of all polls. Btw< Rasmussen got the Hawaii Senate race wrong by 43 points in '08. wokmaster- This is true so we will see who is correct this time around.
hey buddy
I was very happy to see,for the first time this weekend, CatholicVote.com putting up lawn signs adding pro-life PA US Senate candidate Tom Smith to their signs for Romney-Ryan.
This is really significant because Tom Smith isn't Catholic!
Bob Casey,Jr.,claiming to be a Catholic, flunks and doesnt get endorsed, because he doesn't vote like a practicing Catholic.
Just another example of where those, Catholic and non-Catholic, devoted to our First Amendment's Religious Liberty clause are focussing for Election Day. penllynjohn
To Sammy D. Why would anyone decent not vote for Romney-Ryan? Because it is indecent to not run a truthful campaign. From the serious like Romney's total disregard for the truth in his auto industry ads: He advocated help for the industry-a total lie-to the trivial Paul Ryan not even able to tell the truth about his marathon time, these guys are both allergic to the truth. Throw in the fact that Romney thinks its ok to put a guy a heart beat away from the President who advocates total trashing of the safety net and is a champion of a radical anti-choice position-forcing rape victims by law to carry a pregnancy to term. Eagle12- Actually, I very much realize that there are a great many people who are not interested in doing their own research and thinking for themselves, and that it's precisely those people who believe misleading statements such as those made by "eagle12" above. Such people are the ideal audience for the Obama propaganda machine. After the last presidential debate, independent fact-checkers determined that the majority of the lies during that debate were told by Obama. But don't take my word for it, dear readers. All I'm trying to do is to encourage you to do your own research and draw your own conclusions. Any fair-minded, intelligent individual capable of independent thought who reads the above comments by "eagle12" could take the initiative to seek primary sources and not let either what I say or what "eagle12" or anybody else says mindlessly form your opinion for you. Take a good look at what Mitt Romney and Paul Ryan are ACTUALLY saying. Watch clips of the presidential and vice-presidential debates and other events at which these individuals speak. Research for yourself the voting record of Paul Ryan in Congress, and look at how many Democrats co-sponsored bills with him. Look at how Romney successfully governed Massachusetts while working harmoniously with a Democratic majority in that state. Don't settle for cliches, do your own research of primary resources. The more you know, the less that you'll be influenced by malicious propaganda.

Umm, Tony, you're cherrypicking a ringwing Rasmussen poll. The average of all polls, used by RCP, has Obama up by 1.9%. Step out of the bubble. wokmaster
Crockmaster is not to be believed on any partisan post he makes. The Dems took over the Congress in Jan. 2007. The recession ended in June 2009 - through no Obamaa- policy initiative. Obamaa-'s "recovery" is the weakest in 70 years. During Obamaa-'s recovery incomes declined more than during the recession. Crockmaster has forfeited his right to be taken seriously. sharkmeat must be related to the teacher who bullied the student for wearing the Romney/Ryan t-shirt. Those Dems are a very tolerant bunch! TyroneShoes
hey buddy - It's not the Prsident's job - or mine - to find you work. The economy is slowly comong back to life. Sorry if it's not fast enough for you. Economists agree that it will take more than 4 years to climb out of the hole that a GOP Congress and president left us. 800,000 were lost the month that Obama was sworen into office. EIGHt HUNDRED THOUSAND! For you to vote for a guy who has essentially the same policies as George Bush would be self-defeating. The "bubble" that Maher refers to has to do with conservatives not believing FACTS. It's what Fox News watchers live in. Don't believe me? Read their posts and compare their "facts" with any fact checking organization.
Sammy, sorry but the media didn't "spin" that Romney quote. I heard it right from his lips. He even called a press conference and stood by it. Of course, he later said he didn't mean it. If you believe him, that's your choice... wokmaster- work, newsflash: Both candidates have lied during this campaign as both parties have for decades. For you to act like it is only going on on one side is laughable. I have no ties to either party but the D's have their own bubble. Yes, Bush was bad but Obama/Biden haven't come through on their promises of jobs and unemployment. Or Guantanamo Bay, or spending, or cutting the debt. Should I continue?
hey buddy
Mark it down Pennsylvania is going to Romney. Obama is a cooked goose. Inquirer poll was incredibly weighted with Democrats. Get angry if you want to do so but Romney has the 20 electoral votes from Pennsylvania. It will be very close in Pa. but Romney will win. There is more to Pa. then Philadelphia. I have followed many polls and this trend is happening. i did not believe it at first but now I do. Alpha58
hahahaha no comments allowed on the story about how GOP governers are poised for a huge gain . truth hurts i guess! 420Phillie
here's an idea. everyone vote however they choose and stop pretending that other people's vote has anything to do with your self-righteous being. 420Phillie
republicans are desperate. obama with leads in all swing states. betting markets are favoring obama at 3 to 1 odds. romney needs ohio or he's done. kimura
Thanks for the laugh, Sammy. You must not know anyone in the 47% he spoke about in that 'quiet room'. wokmaster- wok:
I'm recommending that you learn how to think for yourself, rather than repeating propaganda that you've heard. Look at what Mitt Romney actually said, not the malicious spin that those who wish to manipulate you hand to you.
Because the Obama administration has nothing to run on, they desperately attempt to rely on demonizing those who are genuinely working for the well-being of Americans. As Mitt Romney himself has told Obama, demonizing Romney is not a constructive political agenda. Americans want to know how the economy and American's standing in the world will be improved, not how much Obama can maliciously demonize a decent individual like Mitt Romney. SammyD - Workmaster, maybe you can help people get work because Obama hasn't.I am an independent and not a Romney fan but you can't tell me things have gone well the past 4 years. You speak of Bill Maher's Republican "bubble" but you and him need to step out of your own.
hey buddy
Why would any decent American not vote for Romney/Ryan? Those who had any negative thoughts towards Mitt Romney and Paul Ryan were the victims of the extensive negative Democrat's propaganda that attempted to demonize these very fine individuals before Americans had had an opportunity to get to know them. Once Americans had an opportunity to see Mitt Romney at the first presidential debate, the game changed considerably, because many Americans saw with their own eyes, heard with their own ears and resolved with their own minds that Mitt Romney is an extremely decent individual, not anything like what the Obama propaganda machine had attempted to present to the American public. Anybody who still does not believe in the extreme decency, sincerity and deep concern for the well-being of America's future that Mitt Romney possesses, should take a better look and learn to form their own opinion instead of mindlessly repeating the malicious propaganda issued by lowlives like David Axelrod and Jim Messina. sharkmeat - I used to be a Democrat, and, although I supported Obama in '08 I definitely feel very strongly that Obama does not deserve my vote or my support again. People like me, who traditionally came from a Jewish Democratic background should re-evaluate their party affiliation. The Democratic party of today is not the same as it was when we first believed in it. Today's Democratic party attempts to discourage having an open mind. Once I state that I believe that Mitt Romney is the better candidate for the presidency, I have found that it’s impossible to hold a rational conversational conversation with a Democrat. They just cannot express a case for their party without becoming abusive. "sharkmeat" is a case in point. As a Jewish American, I find the vile irrational hatred being encouraged by the Democratic party very disturbing. Any political party that routinely uses abusive language as a political strategy should be a matter of concern to Jewish people who are very much aware what political divisiveness and demonization can do to a country’s stability.
Aharon - Members of the Democratic party have become abusive to those who express an opinion that differs from their own. "shark meat" is a case in point. It's a rather frightening phenomenon and I urge any thinking person who identifies themselves as "Democrat" to re-consider their party affiliation.

Who is the Republican Party in the Citizens United age? If you had to point to the ‘Republican Party’ would you be more likely to point to Reince Preibus (and implicitly the RNC) or Karl Rove (and Crossroads GPS)? I bet candidates consider Rove more important.
Preibus is the chairman of the RNC; Karl Rove founded American Crossroads, a super PAC, and Crossroad GPS, a tax exempt independent expenditure organization that is not required to disclose donors. So far in the 2011-12 election cycle, American Crossroads and Crossroads GPS have spent $174.28 million, a sum two million dollars greater than the $172.2 million spent by the Republican Congressional and Senatorial Committees combined.
