Pa. voters disapprove of Gov. Corbett

POSTED: Tuesday, January 29, 2013, 6:41 AM

At midterm, Gov. Tom Corbett finds himself in the hole with Pennsylvania voters, who disapprove of the job he is doing 42 percent to 36 percent, according to a Quinnipiac University poll released Tuesday.

A strong negative rating from women and lackluster support among Republicans are driving the low approval rating. Women disapprove of Corbett’s performance 45 percent to 31 percent, while men narrowly give him a thumbs-up, 41 percent to 37 percent – a large gender gap.

By 51 percent to 31 percent, Pennsylvania voters say that Corbett, a Republican, does not deserve to be reelected. Only 49 percent of GOP voters would support him if the election ere held today.

"It’s halftime in Gov. Tom Corbett’s first term and if he were running a football team instead of a state, he’d fire his offensive coordinator,” said Tim Malloy, assistant director of the Quinnipiac University Polling Institute. “Gov. Corbett has hit the 50 percent approval rating only once so far, mainly because of his bad grades from women.”

Corbett, who came into office in 2011 facing a $4.2 billion budget deficit, slashed spending for education and social-safety net programs in his first two budgets, while keeping his pledge not to raise taxes. He also generated controversy and earned scorn from many female voters when he supported a bill requiring that women get ultrasounds before having an abortion. Asked about this at a news conference, Corbett said that women who objected could “close their eyes.”

Pennsylvania voters disapprove 50 – 26 percent of the way Corbett has handled the Sandusky sex-abuse scandal at Penn State over the last few years. Yet 43 percent approve of the lawsuit Corbett has launched against the NCAA sanctions against the university’s football program, the poll found.

From January 22 – 27, Quinnipiac University surveyed 1,221 registered voters with a margin of error of plus or minus 2.8 percentage points. Live interviewers called randomly selected land lines and cell phones.

Governor, I supported you last election because I thought you will be an honest person running a transparent government and rooting out corruption.

    You failed in every dimension!

ELK, see my below post...you may want to rethink your position.

    Rendell is akin to Bush.

What does Rendell have to do with Corbett taking political contributions from Texas fracking companies and in return, he gives them tax breaks so that they can drill on our lands without contributing anything to the communities that they drill in?

That's the real corruption that has been going on within the Corbett administration and it's clear as day. I wouldn't be surprised if there's a federal corruption investigation that pops up, looking into Corbett's administration over the next two years.

Dax....didn't know that creating tens of thousands of new jobs was not "contributing anything to the communities they drill in"??? Moreover, I know thousands of land owners making some great money off of land leases....much needed money in their communities.

You are so against people its scary. Typical hate filled liberal.

Professor, the jobs you speak of went to Texans who were hired by these Texan fracking companies.

Perhaps you should go out to some of these communities and find out for yourself.

Actually daxtreme, it has NOTHING to do with Gov Rendell, and perfesser, the thousands of jobs are, typically, lowly paid and backbreaking work. But, that's what the wealthy want for the poor--keep them there and producing more workers. (Reread Ricardo, perfesser!)

To expect but the most passing lip service to honesty from politicians, I have come to suspect, is absolutely, positively hoping for way too much!

If this state has any hope of staying afloat, he will be re-elected. Do a search and see for yourself which states are well run and which are deep in debt. Surprise! Republicans are the most fiscally responsible, democrats run up large debts obligating their subjects to multi generational tax bills.

Corrupt Tommy Corbett will be a one term governor!!! More interested in taking money for his campaign than getting pedophile Jerry Sandusky off the streets when he was Attorney General. How many children could have been saved from being molested if he only did his job?

for hawk - since our illustrious legislators have just introduced a right to work bill, I sincerely doubt that Corbett is interested in paying off debt. If it goes through, which I have no doubt it will, we will be paying less taxes to pay off the debt because we will be making less money. Why don't you pay attention to the news. Corbett hasn't accomplished the anti-citizen legislation by himself. I wonder what the people think about their legislators. We just finished re-electing these creeps.

Palmer, non-union or a "Right To Work" State often means many MORE JOBS for many more people as employers relocate to those states.

Why don't you want Pennsylvanians to have more jobs?

Further, your argument that less pay means less taxes is a farce, whereas MORE JOBS means more revenue!

And just what kind of jobs will those be?? Minimum wage, or low wage jobs with no health benefits. Welcome to the world of the permanent temp workforce.

There are plenty of $7.25-$9.00 an hour jobs. I know many people whose UC ran out and have gone from making $15-$20 per hour to $10 to $12 per hour. Major lifestyle shifts. No more perks. Cuts in family spending. Republicans are creating an underclass of service workers. Welcome to the third world.

Yes, taking money out of the economy by paying workers less will make the economy better. Only idiots believe this.
