The Pennsylvania Conference of Teamsters on Thursday endorsed state Treasurer Rob McCord in the Democratic primary for governor, citing his personal story and record of battling Gov. Corbett’s policies in Harrisburg.

William Hamilton, president of the conference, sent a letter to his 95,000 members across the state announcing the decision to back McCord. The Teamsters nod came two days after the official launch of McCord’s campaign.

“Rob McCord knows what working families in Pennsylvania are going through because he's been there,” Hamilton wrote. “He's experienced the kind of economic insecurity that Tom Corbett is causing so many Pennsylvania families to feel today, so we know Rob will fight for us.” Hamilton vowed, “We will have our boots on the ground” in the May 2014 primary.

McCord, 54, rose from relative poverty as a child to become a successful venture capitalist specializing in high-tech start up firms. He was elected treasurer in 2008, and reelected last year.

Eight candidates are vying for the nomination to take on the incumbent.
