Fattah fundraiser in D.C.

U.S. Rep. Chaka Fattah, running for reelection and dealing with legal bills from a years-long federal investigation, has scheduled a fundraiser for later this month in Washington.

U.S. Rep. Chaka Fattah, seeking an 11th term amid a federal corruption investigation that snared a top adviser, has scheduled a Sept. 30 breakfast fundraiser in Washington.

Suggested donations are $500 for individuals, $1,000 for PACs and $2,500 for a "host," according to a copy of the invitation provided to Big Tent. The invite highlights Fattah's powerful position as the ranking Democrat on the House Appropriations subcommittee dealing with spending on science and justice programs.

Fattah apparently can use the money.

The most recent federal campaign finance report, filed in mid-July, showed he had $6,336 in the bank as of June 30. His Republican challenger Armond Jones, a Philadelphia teacher, has raised only raised and spent less than $5,000, the threshold for having to file a federal campaign report.

Fattah has spent at least $45,000 from his campaign fund on legal fees this year, according to the FEC reports.

Gregory Naylor, a political adviser to Fattah and the congressman's former chief of staff, pleaded guilty last month last month to charges of accepting an illegal $1 million loan to Fattah's 2007 mayoral campaign – and organizing a scheme to repay it.
