Suck on this, torture fans:

I asked CIA Director Leon Panetta for the facts, and he told me the following: The trail to bin Laden did not begin with a disclosure from Khalid Sheik Mohammed, who was waterboarded 183 times. The first mention of Abu Ahmed al-Kuwaiti — the nickname of the al-Qaeda courier who ultimately led us to bin Laden — as well as a description of him as an important member of al-Qaeda, came from a detainee held in another country, who we believe was not tortured. None of the three detainees who were waterboarded provided Abu Ahmed’s real name, his whereabouts or an accurate description of his role in al-Qaeda.

...this is exactly what happened.

Yeah, right.

Sacre blue!**

PARIS — French lawmakers opened debate on Tuesday on proposals to ban a method for extracting oil and gas deposits from shale because of environmental concerns, throwing up the first serious stumbling block to firms that want to use the practice.

Nobody could have predicted...

One of the four FCC commissioners who voted for Comcast's sweet-deal-merger with NBC-Universal back in January has now been hired as Comcast's lobbyist.

Thirty years ago today, the greatest rock star ever to prowl the streets of Wilmington passed away at a ridiculously young age:

Ibis met (Bob) Marley after Marley’s wife, Rita, visited his specialty and gift shop at 24th and Market streets in Wilmington in 1969. Rita, who was living a block away with Marley and his mother, was looking over the art and jewelry from all over the world that Ibis sold.

Ibis noticed she was barefoot. “I was curious about it and asked her where she was from and she told me Jamaica,” he says.

For a locality that consistently pats itself on the back for how well-educated and affluent it is, I've never been very impressed by the political leadership of Montgomery County. That's particularly true of a string of district attorneys there -- who race to KYW with a glowing press release every time they arrest some Joe Blow but aren't so big on prosecuting the powerful or the politically connected.

Still, none of that prepared me for the unbearable lameness of being that has been current DA Risa Vetri Fermanover the last 24 hours, in the wake of the horrific pedophile murder of a 9-year-old girl (and my condolences to her family and loved ones for an incomprehensible loss) and questions about her earlier encounter with the 25-year-old scumbag alleged killer. Which is worse -- the failure of police or prosecutors to do more after the first report or Ferman's inadequate and bloodless explanation of what happened?

From a bizarre posting from the New York Times' Matt Bai about "presidential candidate" Newt Gingrich:

In particular, Mr. Gingrich is a devotee of the historian Arnold J. Toynbee, who meditated on the concept of “departure and return” — the idea that great leaders have to leave (or be banished from) their kingdoms before they can better themselves and return as conquering heroes.

Elect everyone governor of a large state for eight years.

Of course, they'll announce their marital breakup within weeks of leaving office, so maybe it's not a perfect plan. Wonder if Arnold and my Daily News co-worker Ed Rendell are planning to hit the clubs together, since they share a love of infrastructure and...God knows what else.
