Like a lot of TV viewers last night, I was utterly baffled by the stately mansion-like structure that flashed on that big screen behind John McCain a couple of times last night (above) -- my first thought was that maybe it was one of John and Cindy's seven or eight or dozen or so houses. But as you might expect, folks were using the Google through the night and what they learned was rather odd.

Turns out the building is Walter Reed Middle School in North Hollywood, Calif. So -- what was that all about? Was McCain promising to transform education for Hollywood liberals, so they would learn the virtues of low taxes and free markets? Maybe, but the best speculation is that the GOP's AV Club members wanted a shot of the Walter Reed Army Medical Center, and they goofed.

McCain himself wouldn't have made that mistake, since he's visited wounded troops at Walter Reed and elsewhere on many occasions, and God bless him for that. But it's a sad metaphor when the party that's running the convention this week and running the country for eight years -- during which conditions at Walter Reed deteriorated to an appalling level until exposed by the Washington Post -- can't even tell the difference between the hospital for our troops wounded in Iraq and Afghanistan and a middle school that's 3,000 miles away.

Any blog site, online news site, daily newspaper or national magazine if reporting this story WOULD say the young mans race. Saying that they would not is just you be disingenuous as usual. As far as calling me a racist all I can do is laugh at that. I have true friends of all races and nationalities. I've dated women of many races. I don't judge people on race, skin color, nationality or religion. I judge them on character. My simple criteria when judging people is are you a good person or are you an jerk. Which one are you batty?

Has anyone seen the new McCain ads where he blames says Obama will be responsible for huge deficits and unbalanced budgets? LOL!!! Are you kidding me? Does this man not realize that the country had a SURPLUS when Bill Clinton left office? I don't remember "The Maverick" bucking the party line and fighting with "W" to get the budget balanced and to stop building on the largest deficit in history.

Legatus, the young man IS NOT white so your question is totally hypothetical. If he were there wouldn't be any real reason to differentiate except to say say that it was a different boy besides Levi. I never said that the story was true or not. None of us will know until we see the baby. The fact that he is black adds another dynamic to the story and you know it. You can act as if his race would have no factor in this story if you like but if you're honest you will admit that you know this not to be the case.

Lol! So, now the conspiracy deepens. The reason that the flags were neatly rolled up and stacked neatly into plastic bags rather than simply thrown into bags or into the dumpsters is that it was union workers who were dragging the work out so they could make more money. Nice work, 24601. Create some a completely implausible hypothetical to explain what apparently even you realize was a completely illogical assertion. Even better if you can slander good working class Americans as you continue on your campaign of hate, eh? Except, if the Dems were trying not to get caught, once again, the obvious choice would have been to instruct those good working class Americans to stash the flags in the dumpsters where they couldn't be seen unless someone was dumpster diving. Keep digging. I'm sure that you can come up with even more complicated conspiracies and manage to slander even more Americans. And in the process, you will continue to display further depths of Fraudytood.

Hey batty since you wanted to bring race into this lets just look a few things here. You tell me if the candidates races were reversed would this election be anywhere near as close as it is. !. You have one candidate who graduated from Columbia University and Harvard Law and was President of The Harvard Law Review and the other finished FITH FROM LAST from the Naval Academy and goes on to loose FIVE planes. 2. You have once candidate who is still honoring his marriage vows to his wife and the other cheated on and left his first wife after she no longer measured up to his standards. 3. You have one wife who is addicted to pain killers that she acquired illegally thru her charitable foundation and the other is a Princeton and Harvard Law grad. 4. You have one candidate who is criticized because he is a charismatic, eloquent speaker the other is lauded as a 'hero" although there are vets and FELLOW REPUBLICAN senators and congressmen who accused him of giving information to the enemy and to blocking vets from getting even the most basic POW/MIA info and getting it all classified FOREVER because his deeds might be found out. 5. You have one candidate who is ridiculed for working as a community organizer to help out of work citizens get the help they needed when he could have taking jobs in the private sector making much better money and the other was one of The Keating Five. I'm sure there are logical explanations for all of this so I'll wait for you to enlighten me.

OK, let's think about this logically... you are a union contractor in a union arena being hired to collect the leftovers from a union-pandering Democrat convention. Are your union workers, being paid by the hour, trying their hardest to not waste valuable time, because we all know unions laborers' top priority is to not waste one second of time when working. In my line of work I have gone to many large-scale conventions and trade shows and I can tell you, a union laborer will roll up flags and put them into bags and take their break not one second later then 10:00, 12:00, 2:00, and 4:00 and not care one whit about spending too much time doing anything regardless of what it is. Give it up already, the flags were being thrown out and they got caught. Just admit it and move on... .org

Well, at least 24601 tried to offer an explanation. Too bad that it is so inane. Let's think about this together, K? You have a 12 thousand flags to throw away. Are you going to carefully roll them up, stack them and put them carefully in plastic bags and leave the bags next to dumpsters, or are you going TO JUST PUT THE FLAGS DIRECTLY INTO THE DUMPSTERS without carefully rolling them up, stacking them, and putting them into plastic bags? If your answer is the former, whatever kind of work it is you do, for the sake of the economy, I hope that you charge by the hour (that is, unless you work for the public sector). Republican lackey logic. You just can't argue with it.

Talking Point Dingaling, If you are putting anything into a trashbag you roll it up, fold it, compact it, etc., etc. because you want to get more than 10 of them into each bag. It's only common sense, eh? Every Monday and Thursday when I put out the trash and recycleables I fold the newspapers in order to get the most of them into the paper bags before putting them onto the curb. When you are throwing out 12,000 American Flags you roll them up because you want to be able to use less then 2,000 trash bags to do it. Make sense nitwit? While we're on the subject of ducking, why would anyone put all these American flags into trash bags and stack them in and around the trash dumpsters waiting for over a week to be collected with the trash unless they were intending the throw them out? Oh, I forgot, the most logical explanation is that it was a vast right-wing conspiracy to make Obama look bad. Right, uh-huh, makes sense...

Let's assume for the sake of argument, that the flag story is true. What the heck does it have to do with the issues in this election? This is typical neo-con deflection and spin, trying to keep the average voter from thinking about the issues that count: i.e. the economy, Bush's disasterous administration, etc. To my fellow Obamans, from now on, let's ignore these neo-con wingnut "side issues" and concentrate on hitting them and McCain/Palin on where they are the weakest. THE REAL ISSUES. Let's not allow ourselves to get caught up in the personality game. Let the neo-cons wallow in it by themselves, because if they do, they will most certainly lose this election and they KNOW it.

I'm more likely to believe whoever said they were going to be used later on. You can never have too many flags at a political rally. It was launched with bipartisan agreement, but now the R's want to change their mind. Why would that be? The source of the story is a reporter from the Denver Post http://blogs.denverpost.com/opinion/2008/09/06/republican-recycling/ Huff Po's reference to Fox News' Cameron is a canard to try to explain it away as ooooh, the evil Fox News made it all up. The Invesco Field worker who found the flags says they were in trash bags, sitting near the trash on the docks for a week, and would have been thrown out with the rest of the trash if he hadn't found them. Obviously extremely embarassed by the oversight the Democrat Party is now making up the most ridiculous excuses that McCain supported stole the flags and planted them there as a vast right wing plot against Obama. Puhlease, instead of spewing the most ridiculous and moronic excuses why not just admit it was a mistake.

Karl Rove is a genius. He understand the difference between being a Democratic mayor and a Republican mayor. Take a look at the mayors of even the most populous of cities. swifty, where did palin say anything about about doing something for our country. Sounded liek she just kept saying, "Obama's bad, vote for us." She mentioned no policies, did not address the economy. She appeared to dismiss all those people living in cities or have college degrees. She equates Wasilla with Philly, Chicago, NYC, LA. Sorry, mayors of those cities can't hold bake sales to balance the budget. And Ed Rendell and 48 other governors can't rely on the oil companies and the feds to supply 2/3's of their states' revenue. Pretty easy to be the gov of one of the smallest states when you don't have to worry about cutting services or raising taxes. And how did palin, who is supposed to be such an anti-establishment, anti-lobbyist candidate get so many millions in earmarks for her sinky little town and kept the money for the "bridge to nowhere" that she pushed for, then dropped when DC pulled the plug. Why didn't she give the money back? "Ask not what the money is for, but ask how we can keep the taxpayers' money." BTW, that means your money and mine.

Hey, batboy, no one is bashing palin's daughter. They are bashing her for being a hypocrit. She asks for privacy, but throws her kid out there. Then, she has the gall to bring the kid's boyfriend to the convention from Alaska to throw him in front of the media. Did she think they wouldn't take pictures, make comments? She talks about her baby and how she'll be an advocate for the disabled. Did she start any of those programs in Alaska? And why have there been about zero pictures of her with the baby, but lots of her daughter holding her brother. Seems to me that most mothers who care about their children, special needs or not, like to hold them, be almost afraid to let others nurture them at five months. The woman fits in perfectly with mccain-they are both frauds. Issues anyone?

"Yes We Can!" coming from the crowd. But when Obama says change he's ridiculed. When Obama supporter chant "Yes We Can", they are drinking the kool-aide. Gotta love it!

Stoopid is as stooopid does. This party can't find the right countries to attack, and can't even find the buildings to show for the ACCEPTANCE SPEECH BY IT'S CANDIDATE? What a bunch of idiots. But hey, the internets and tubes are new to these white old men. Give them time to learn how to use the google.....

"Legatus, I would even give McCain a pass on that one. I've heard LOTS of people FROM Pennsylvania pronounce it incorrectly." Exactly! It's ludicrous isn't it? The same is true of this entire Walter Reed flap (if it even rises to the level of "flap"). Glad that you are one of the few Democrats on this comment section that gets it.

Let's see. McCain doesn't know how many houses he has and Obama pronounces Nittany Lions incorrectly. Which is worse. You be the judge.

Talk is cheap. Who cares what anyone says. They need to prove they can do something. McCain has. Obama, not so much.

You don't need to know what a Nittany Lion is in order to know that it is the Penn State mascot, and how to pronounce it properly.

I also enjoyed the part of McCain's speech where he talked about how people should contribute to America by teaching an illiterate person how to read...then the camera cut to a guy holding up a sign that said "THE MAVRICK". Sheer serendipity.

And BRW, McCain keeps mentioning Czechslovakia in his speeches, and said Putin was the president of Germany. These things are minor gaffes that everyone makes, but of course some desperate hyperpartisans want to make huge issues out of them because they can't talk about the real issues.

McCain continually wants credit for his military service, yet he and his inept staffers can't find a picture of Walter Reid? Should'nt he have noticed the building looks slightly different from the one in DC? Pathetic. And yes,if Obama's campaign made the same mistake he would be accused of not being an American. I love how the GOP speaks out of both sides of their mouths when convenient.

Notice how the neo-cons have completely spun away from the issue that Will Bunch raised here? Typical GOP strategy. NEVER debate the issue if you think it will hurt you. However, the smoke and mirrors routine will not work for the GOP this time. That is why the neo-cons are getting more shrill and desperate every day.

LOL, this is really funny. Makes me kind of sad that McCain's speech didn't include, as some of his fans here at Attytood have on his behalf, a reference to Obama's community work being inspired by Alinsky and Marx. I would have enjoyed a giant photo of Groucho/Harpo/Chico.

I am still very confused on why the number of McCain's homes are an issue in this election. If the man has real estate holdings, does that make him a bad man? Didn't the Clintons use a vacation home as residence for Hillary to run for office in New York? I believe our former mayor and now governor had a few homes but was never grilled about it. For all of the things you can go after, financial portfolio just seems silly. People in high office make a few hundred thousand a year in salary and even more in public speaking (see Clinton, Bill). Just as stupid is that you need to reach that far to slam a man because he is speaking at a building that also serves as a name for a famed hospital run into the ground for many years and not just 8 republican years. Hey Will, just try one time to look at things down the middle without judgement and it is ok if you agree with something said by someone that does not have the (D) next to their name.

The surge has worked beyond's anyones imagination in lessening violence; but what about what the Iraqi government was supposed to achieve? With this surge, weren't they supposed to have achieved accords within their own divisive house? Has that happened? What is going to happen when we start pulling troops out? Or, should we just keep them for 100 years, like McCain suggests?

To "the genius" -- who in the Democratic/Liberal etc. do you attribute the thought that they "despise" the military? How do you come by that idea? Wasnt it a Democrat that involved us in WWII? Viet Nam? Isnt it Bill Clinton who was accused of stretching our military thin? Do not Democrats have loved ones fighting, and getting injured, and dying, in our military? Do you think they despise the military? No, what is despised is being lied to, having our young men and women put in harms way over that lie, and having to deal with the inflation caused by that lie. As a self titled "genius" please do more to live up to that name -- like critical thinking. Thanks from all of us..

Captain Awesome: The backdrop was horrible. It shrouded McCain in bright green for a good chunk of his speech. More reporting is necessary here, though, to make the claim that this was a mistake by the people who set up the convention. McCain's bit about school choice was very important. Republicans usually try to tiptoe around the teacher's union so as not to upset them. McCain went right at them on behalf of parents and students. I think a school is an appropriate backdrop for that sentiment. (I just wish the school looked more like a school and left either a flag or a blue background behind McCain. I should also note that I agree this does not matter at all. Who votes on background?)

Can you imagine if this had happened during an Obama speech? The right-wing howler monkeys would be at it nonstop: "Obama is so uninterested in the troops he doesn't even know what Walter Reed Hospital looks like!" Malkin would be in full-on ragegasm. Hannity would devote a misty 3-hour Faux News special on the dedicated people at Walter Reed an interject every 5 minutes "and Obama doesn't care about this person!" But whoops, this was a Repubican screwing up, so it's a "complete non-issue." IOKIYAR.

People, don't blame McSHAME for the wrong "Walter Reed". The guy who usually makes sure the backgrounds are right is in Alaska, trying to find out how many skeletons are really in Palen's closet, since the regular vetter seems to have been asleep after too many Budweisers!

Bon, education was part of his speech, but you really look at that picture and immediately think it is a school? And it is just coincidence that the school shares the same name as a VA medical center that was the center of a huge scandal? I have no idea if the AV staff is supplied by the building, supplied by the GOP or what, but it looks like someone f-ed up here.

Wolfgang: You want to know why, when the price of oil is crippling our economy, more oil might be a good thing? I will leave it to you to investigate this very difficult question. My hint is: supply and demand. (I, myself, am still waiting for someone to defend Obama's shameless and harmful support for federal ethanol and farm subsidies. Any ideas there?) ----- You might want to wait until this is something more than speculation to get yourself in a huff, Will. Education and school choice were a big part of McCain's speech. I see no reason to think that a picture of a school is a mistake in that context.

So the RNC, McCain staff, and other GOPers do not know the difference between Walter Reed Army Medical Center, where there are wounded soldiers - and a school. I'm shocked - no, actually not shocked. Wow - that's really sad.

The hits keep on coming. Let's see the trolls justify this! And can anyone tell me why drilling for oil is a good idea? Please? Just one Repub needs to explain to me how this is a good idea!
