Wow, that's your best shot? Really?
Mitt Romney -- suddenly down by more than double digits -- "went after" new GOP presidential frontrunner Rick Perry today. Perry's a longtime state official in Texas, governor for the last 11 years, while Romney's most recently been in the home improvement field. So did Romney attack Perry for his anti-science know-nothingism, or his Texas-sized political cronyism?
Though Mr. Romney has assiduously avoided taking on one rival for the Republican presidential nomination, Gov. Rick Perry of Texas, Mr. Romney took a veiled swipe at Mr. Perry in a speech Tuesday before the Veterans of Foreign Wars national convention in San Antonio.
"I have spent most of my life outside of politics, dealing with real problems in the real economy," Mr. Romney said. "Career politicians got us into this mess, and they simply don't know how to get us out."
Veiled swipe? More like an iron-curtained, totally opaque swipe? The important thing to remember is the reason that Mitt Romney is not a career politician is simply because he's not very good at it. He ran for the U.S. Senate as long ago as 1994, when he was still a Reagan denier, went into a non-political political job in running the 2002 Utah Winter Olympics, ran for governor of Massachusetts (OK, he did win that one) and ran for president in 2008 and wasn't even the GOP runner up. Now this "non-career politician" is running for office yet again.
And you know what? Come Jan. 20, 2013, Mitt Romney still won't be a career politician.
