Who will tell the people?

The New Orleans Times-Picayune announced earlier this year that it would only publish a newspaper three days a week. The change -- the first time that a major American city won't have a daily newspaper -- takes effect on Oct. 1.

Thank God it didn't take effect immediately. As I write this, Tropical Storm Isaac, predicted to become a hurricane, is bearing down on New Orleans. As recently as Sunday, forecasts called for Isaac to make landfall further east, on the Florida panhandle. That means the news of the new storm path -- and a hurricane watch and evacuations -- first appeared in a printed newspaper today, Monday.

But starting in October, the Times-Picayune will not publish on Monday. Or Tuesday -- the night that Isaac is expected to strike New Orleans. This in a ciity where as many as a third or more of residents don't have Internet access -- a higher rate than any other U.S. city.
