What we say to conservatives:

“You know, I don’t understand when people are going around worrying about, ‘We need to have English- only.’ They want to pass a law, ‘We want English-only.’ Now, I agree that immigrants should learn English. I agree with that. But understand this. Instead of worrying about whether immigrants can learn English — they’ll learn English — you need to make sure your child can speak Spanish. You should be thinking about, how can your child become bilingual? We should have every child speaking more than one language.

“You know, it’s embarrassing when Europeans come over here, they all speak English, they speak French, they speak German. And then we go over to Europe, and all we can say [is], ‘Merci beaucoup.’ Right? (Laughter) You know, no, I’m serious about this. We should understand that our young people, if you have a foreign language, that is a powerful tool to get a job. You are so much more employable. You can be part of international business. So we should be emphasizing foreign languages in our schools from an early age, because children will actually learn a foreign language easier when they’re 5, or 6, or 7 than when they’re 46, like me.”

What conservatives hear:

Blah blah blah blah blah blah YOU NEED TO MAKE SURE YOUR CHILD CAN SPEAK SPANISH blah blah blah blah blah.

By the way, did you know that Obama can speak Indonesian. He probably uses it to discuss strategy with his terrorist overlords after he gives them the secret fist-jab symbol.

Speaking of baseball, J-Roll hit a triple last night, and the Phillies finally won. Coincidence? I think not.

Open thread, people. It's all out there.

"conservatives want the federal government to have less of a role in saying what is taught in schools. It is Liberals who insist on strict federal guidelines. You have it totally backwards." . . . . . . Bon, let me clue you in. Public education itself is a purely liberal concept, regardless of which branch of government is actually providing it. In fact, a strong federal government was originally a "conservative" concept, because without the regulation of interstate commerce and a national monetary system, the private business sector in the US would be seriously handicapped by artificial barriers between the states. Jefferson, the most liberal thinker of his time, happened to be an ardent anti-Federalist. It's only when the institution of slavery was threatened that States' Rights became the mantra of conservatives, later to be revisited during the Civil Rights era when segregation was threatened. In any event, don't assume that liberal vs. conservative ideologies can be reduced to the tension built into our federalist system between state and federal powers. Like health care, the debate is really about whether education is to be freely available to everyone or only the elite few who can afford it.

Read Obama's quote again. It's a fine example of deflecting the question. He spins it in to an education issue. Is it imperative that US schools the official US language which is English by the way? Sure offer foreign language ELECTIVES as early as possible but insist on English as the language in education. I entered this country at 6 years old and attended a Philadelphia public school within a week. All I could say was "thank you". It was rough but my family knew that when they got on the plane. What's the problem here? It makes sense for a business or a potential employee to promote learning a second language. There are neighborhoods in this city that even back in the 30's, 40's & '50's had corner grocery stores that let it be known that they could speak Polish or Italian --- & they would generate additional business from that knowledge. These are two different arguements: Yes, immigrants should learn English, so they can assimilate into the American culture, but it is in Americans's vested self interests to learn a 2nd language as well. Leave it to Conservatives to spend time arguing as to why they don't need to learn something...

Both Obama and Will are stupid. The reason why English is the preferred language is that it has been the language of business and commerce. Why do foreign companies want to know english? It required no offical edict for English to become the dominant lingua franca over the last century or two. It was simply that the political dominance of the British empire and post-WW2 United States made it a de facto reality. " WHAT JOURNALIST HEAR"// THE SOUND OF A BIG FLUSH//////// Hours after The New York Times Co. suffered the embarrassment of a third person scaling its Eighth Avenue headquarters in recent weeks, the company got pounded by Wall Street, which sent its shares tumbling when an analyst said its stock was pricey relative to its peers. The stock sank 7 percent, or $1.05, to $14.01 yesterday, near its lowest point in 10 years and 77 percent off its 52-week high of $24.76. The drubbing came after Lehman Brothers analyst Craig Huber slammed the Times' shares for being too expensive, compared with Gannett and McClatchy. Huber also ratcheted down his previous price target to $8 a share from $12 a share, due to the industry having deteriorated faster than he earlier predicted, adding, "We think the shares have significant further downside risk over the next year as the stock is the most expensive in the [newspaper] group, plus Street estimates remain way too high in our opinion." He urges the company, which is run by CEO Arthur "Pinch" Sulz berger Jr., to cut its dividend, claiming it should utilize the money to pare down the company's $1.05 billion debt.

I saw the article this morning about Philly's shrinking population. I'm too busy at work today to dig around, but I'm curious to see information about the population of the greater metro area; i.e., are people moving out to the burbs or are they moving to other parts of the country. Personally, I grew up in NJ but moved to NE Philly two years ago to be closer to my job (driving 45 miles each way was killing me). The neighborhood I'm in is safe, and I'm about two miles from the city limits, so my area is pretty suburban in terms of layout. Still, we're going to move next year. The wage tax is a joke. They are talking about charging people for trash collection as a way to encourage people to recycle, but I have never once seen a recycling truck in my neighborhood. And I don't want to have kids and put them through the Philly school system.

"You know, it’s embarrassing when Europeans come over here, they all speak English, they speak French, they speak German. And then we go over to Europe, and all we can say [is], ‘Merci beaucoup'." Since "all [Europeans] speak English", why do we need to worry about speaking their language when we go over to Europe....THEY ALL SPEAK ENGLISH!

Immigrants will learn English, except for the largest bloc coming over, the Hispanics. Asians and Europeans have learned English and assimilate, but Hispanics are not. Why is that? I am so sick of liberal columnists lampooning conservatives. Perhaps, in your mind, conservatives are deaf regarding Obama's speech, but I say to you liberals are blind to what is going on around them. In 50 years we will not recognize this nation. It will be Balkanized. Go to Southern CA and see the Mexican flags hanging all over the place. It's bad enough illegals are allowed to stay in this country and get all the tax benefits a US citizen may receive; asking them to learn the language really isn't too much to ask, is it?

This is what liberals hear. Blah, blah, blah, blah, blah, blah, blah, blah, blah, blah, blah, blah, blah, blah, blah, blah, conservatives suck, blah, blah, ...... There is nothing more close minded than an open minded liberal...

Well, maybe "have to" is too strong of a phrase, but it is definitely more of a necessity than in the US. I used the European example because that was the one cited in the quote from Barak. The real reason they all know English is because of all the tv and movies we send around the world (I'm only half kidding).

Obviously, Ramon, not all Europeans "have to" learn multiple languages to function in their daily lives. That's ridiculous. And it's not just Europe. Asians make a concerted effort to learn multiple languages also. Why? Because they place a high value on education and improving themselves.

Of course Europeans speak more than one language. They have to in order to be able to function in their daily lives. Think of it this way. If there were different languages in each state in the US (I'm not talking about regional slang, I'm talking honest to goodness languages) of course we would learn them. NJ people would speak Pennsylvanian and vice versa. Europeans do it out of neccessity, not because they are somehow superior people. And immigrants will learn English? Ever been to LA, NY, or Miami? Oh yeah, (insert sarcastic font)they all know English (end sarcastic font).

What's the term for someone who speaks three languages? Trilingual. What's the term for someone who speaks two languages? Bilingual. What's the term for someone who speaks one language? American.

I agree with Xi Jah. Americans should just insist that everyone speak English. Think of how much it will help with the "war on terror" when all those terrorists knuckle under and stat speaking English because Xi Jah thinks they should. It'll make tapping their phones, (without getting warrants, mind you), soooooo much easier.

Dios mío! I think English SHOULD be the official language--this nonsense about how cheesesteak places should be staffed to take orders in any language is political correctness gone crazy. At the same time, Obama is right--parents should push their children to learn a second language if for no other reason than to expand their minds and further their education. Mrs. Awesome and I were in Punta Cana last month on vacation and met a lot of Europeans who were fluent in two or even three languages.

Spanish is an international language but BOH should not have limited his example to it. How about Chinese or German or Japanese? I can speak 2 1/2 languages (English, Italian and Thai) and it a great advantage in my job with an international company. Capite, tutti?

Any kind of push to expand the scope of education to make A-mur-i-cans bilingual drives cons apoplectic considering their stance on alternative lifestyles........But seriously folks.....
