They are the walruses -- and they need ice

POSTED: Tuesday, September 14, 2010, 5:47 PM

The iceman departeth:

Ferreira theorizes that ship traffic is diverting the walruses to shore in unusual increasing numbers. But government scientists suspect it has more to do with an increasing lack of sea ice. Walruses have been known to haul out onto land in large numbers in Russia, but never on the Alaska side of their migratory corridor in the tens of thousands, as is being witnessed this year.

Walrus researchers with the United States Geological Survey estimate there could be anywhere from 10,000 to 20,000 of the mammals currently taking a rest along Alaska's Chukchi coastline. Ferreira, one of about 234 people who call Point Lay home, thinks the numbers may be even higher. Since only about 20 percent of walruses generally come to shore, scientists suspect another 80,000 walruses may be swimming nearby.

A grim reminder that elections come and go, but the crushing problems that the elections are supposed to address grind on in this country. Speaking of which, it was a kind of a lost day and I'll be covering those elections in Delaware and elsewhere for the Daily News, so there may not be any new posts. Talk among yourselves, as there is a lot going on in the world.

Thank you Delaware and the many Democrats who registered Republican just to get this nut on the ballot!

"Pssssssst, Christine--There's a UFO in the bushes outside your condo." Too funny Jim. I did hear she checks the bushes outside her home...Gotta love it!

Libbies, you may joke, but the result of this should scare not Republicans, but DEMOCRATS. The voters of Delaware just tossed out the third highest profile politician in Delaware, who by all description was a very respected person by all sides. Red flashing lights should be going off. Sarah Palin just managed to influence an election some 6000 miles away from her home state, and it's clear that voters are ANGRY. I think this lady has a real shot at becoming "the distinguished Senator from Delaware". If Delawareans were so willing to toss out Mike Castle, what makes you think they are going to choose Chris Coons??

==]].I suggest you check out the graphs of the Milankovitch cycles for the last 350K years. You'll find that the heating cycles (4 of them) are all quite rapid. [[== Oh brother. So, downy, do you think the rapid rise in temperatures is due to Milankovitch cycles? Too funny. Oh yeah, and there's this: --snip-- While Milankovitch cycles have tremendous value as a theory to explain ice-ages and long-term changes in the climate, they are unlikely to have very much impact on the decade-century timescale. --snip--

==]] TPS -- any adult who has small children. [[== ==]] Other than when they are talking to their children, Iggy? I can just see it now: You're playing some poker with the boyz. You put down your brew and your cigar and ask them to hold off on the next deal 'cause you gotta to take a p**p.

==]] If Delawareans were so willing to toss out Mike Castle, what makes you think they are going to choose Chris Coons?? [[== ==]] Polls actually show Coons preferred over O'Donnell by a wide margin... among Castle voters (i.e., moderate Republicans). It doesn't look like she'll get Castle's endorsement. Obviously, she pulled off one upset already - but there is every reason to believe that she's facing an uphill battle in the election.

"If Delawareans were so willing to toss out Mike Castle, " Actually that sentence should read "If Delawareans who have registered Republican are so willing to toss out Mike Castle". Remember Iggy, it is a PRIMARY, where the wingers are eating their own. LOVE IT! Pass the popcorn!

"but the result of this should scare not Republicans, but DEMOCRATS." . . . . . Actually, it should scare the corporate-sponsored establishment that runs this country and the media, and thought it owned the people. This is a great omen. The Dem Party is next to be purged, and there are signs that is happening too.
