The other King who marched: Honoring Veterans Day

POSTED: Thursday, November 11, 2010, 1:43 PM

Paul Rieckhoff reminds us about another King who marched in America: This time to honor our military veterans:

As vets, we need every American to have our backs. You don't have to be a veteran to support the new veterans movement. Alvin King knew that. He wasn't a veteran and he didn't do it alone. It took an entire groundswell of civilians and veterans alike. It's on each of us to build the movement he started back in Emporia, Kan. and take it all the way around the world. And unlike Alvin, we have social media tools and virtual communities to make our movement that much greater. And this year, it won't take more than a minute of your time to show your support and gratitude to these brave men and women. In just a few clicks you can march with Iraq and Afghanistan Veterans of American (IAVA) on Facebook or Twitter to show them that we've got their backs this Veterans Day.

It doesn't matter if you voted for the Green Party or the Tea Party, live in Boston or the Bayou; Veterans Day is about uniting as a country and supporting our nation's troops and veterans. We can turn the page on a divided America and unite the country on this important day.

I know Alvin King would be proud.

Say what you will about the Internet/blogosphere, but there are a lot of great and sometimes provocative pieces out there about the true meaning of Veterans Day. I would encourage you to read some of these and reflect:

Aaron Sorkin says bumper-sticker patriotism is no way to honor veterans.

Stu Bykofsky wonders why we don't give our veterans a day off today.

Colin Powell wonders why we ask more of our troops today when we did in World War II.

Lt. Dan Choi on the war that gay veterans are fighting at home.

Bob Kinder on the long road home.

Notice the GLARING absence of THANKING OUR VETERANS for their service to the country in this post. Nice, Will. Since you didn't do it, I will: Thank you to all who serve and have served in our Armed Forces for your service to all Americans.

It takes a lot of stones for the ultra-left Huffington Post to lecture anyone on how to honor our Veterans.

Hey bill.. You have no idea what will would do and your ignorant opinion, and those of your ilk, have been played out here for far too long. And if you are offended, I don't care. I'm offended by your oral diarrhea every time I read this blog but I defended your right to express your opinion (no matter how ignorant) in the jungles and rice paddies of Vietnam. Today of all days, I feel no qualms expressing my true feelings to you. I had friends who died to defend your rights and, for them, let me say,why not STFU?

Thats the best you can do Will ? , most veterans I know and I'm betting I know a damn sight more than handnik beleive liberals hate them, and the lack of posts by known liberals on this site thanking vets just proves that theory.

Every time I read a Will Bunch article, I CRINGE to look at the comments posted by the know-nothing jerks whose only goal in commenting is to trumpet your ignorance and tell Will what an moron he is. I hoped - foolishly - reading a piece on Veterans Day (ABOUT veterans, no less) would maybe keep the rudeness at bay. What a bunch of classless people. If you hate Bunch's blog so much, why are you here EVERY DAY commenting on it? I wish there was a way to block comments so I wouldn't have to look at the anger and vitriol you spew every time something is written that is remotely intelligent or that challenges your narrow worldview in the least.

PAEnglish - From what depths of a disesed mind do you dredge up the nonsense you spew? I'm a vet, and a Liberal as are every member of my family that have served this country in time of war from the Revolution to the Gulf. We don't want, nor need thanks from folks with such empty minds. No vet does. Keep your thanks.

jojostarbuck says: "Every time I read a Will Bunch article, I CRINGE to look at the comments posted by the know-nothing jerks..." and then he follows with: "If you hate Bunch's blog so much, why are you here..." So jojo, the obvious question is, if you cringe to look at the comments, why are here doing so?

Just the other day I over heard some vets saying how much they loved liberal icon Jane Fonda. Absolutely.

SBVFT - I actually believe Handnik's statement. I doubt that Handnik spend much time with conservatives so the only people he knows are liberals - most of veterans he knows are liberals, most of the lawyers he knows are liberals, most of the sex offenders he knows are liberals, most of the drug addicts he knows are liberals, most of the (FILL IN THE BLANK) he knows are liberals.
