What a week -- first we learn that BP's Tony Hayward was "demonised" (as they spell it across the pond) and now the Phillies are "Domonized"!

The Domonic Brown era has begun.

Centerfielder Shane Victorino was placed on the 15-day disabled list with an abdominal strain on his left side, the Phillies announced.

The Phillies selected the contract of Brown, the organization's top prospect, from Triple A Lehigh Valley to take his roster spot. Brown will wear No. 9 and will be available for tonight’s game against the Diamondbacks, presumably as the starting rightfielder.

This may be more proof that sometimes the best trades are the ones you don't make -- what shape would the Phillies be in if they had shipped out Jayson Werth over the weekend? On the other hand, if Brown goes on a tear (and Phillies fan may be overly optimistic in that regard) the team will have quite a traffic jam when Victorino comes back. All things considered, I don't think the Phils will make the big trade that fans are demanding and expecting -- I think they get some bullpen help on the sly and that's it. There's too much uncertainty, and a lot of bad karma -- although the fact that they're winning anyway has to get you more excited about the 2010 team, which has already taken blow after blow after blow.

So tonight, it's Revolution No. 9. No. 9! No. 9! No. 9!.....

Didn't the Phillies bring Howard up mid-season in 05, and he ended up winning Rookie of the Year? Domonic Brown may have a shot.

jmc, as I recalled it Howard was brought up in June (after Thome went down to injury) and had roughly a month more than Brown might have -- in which he hit 22 HRs. Also, you just confirmed my point -- that people are putting unrealistic expectations on this kid. All signs are that he's going to be All-Star caliber, but he's also a rookie who's going to strike out and make errors or base-running blunders and all that other good stuff.

On the trip to CBP, he already rescued a kitten and solved the budget crisis.

I still think the Phillies end up with Oswalt - only legit partner Houston has to deal him to. If the Phillies take on Oswalt's full salary Astros will settle for less in terms of players but I still don't see them being able to do deal without giving up Happ. Probably Happ and Worley gets it done.

Not taking anything away from Howard but Howard won NL ROY in one of the weakest rookie classes ever. If I remember correctly Howard's biggest competition was Jeff Francouer.

To add to Howard's case, he was the latest rookie ever to be called up and still win ROY. Even if Brown lights the world on fire, he'd still have Heyward and Strasburg miles ahead of him in the ROY voting.

There's also Jaime Garcia and Buster Posey.

tdog - doubt Strasburg has much of a chance you have to figure the Nationals are going to shut him down for year if he has another flair up. Already looks like he will miss his start against Phillies this weekend. I think the real front runner for NL ROY besides Heyward is Jaime Garcia (StL) the kid has great numbers and a darkhorse (I hate to say for obvious reasons) is Ike Davis (NYM).

Anybody know what the actual rule is that defines "Rookie?" Will Brown still be a Rookie next year if he plays, say 60 games with the Phils this year?

RG - I forgot Posey. Good call. Must be my elitist East Coast leanings.

mdmcgrory - for a hitter it is less than 130 ABs. If Brown is up for 60 games I imagine he will be playing most of them but it could be close if they just kept him up for September and played Raul/Shane/Werth the final month.

He'd still be a rookie with 60 games. There are a few good rookies this year, and the race may depend on what happens in Aug/Sept. I would just be happy if Brown can catch and throw on line. Hitting will come.

mdmcgrory - interesting eligibility story. Scott Rolen was NL ROY in 1997 but would not have been if he hadn't been HBP in his final 1996 AB. Rolen had 130 ABs in 1996 - if he had made an out or got a hit instead of the HBP Rolen would not have been considered a rookie in 1997.
