With the Phillies there was so much talk about the synergy between '80 and '08, (not to mention with Tug McGraw 45 and Brad Lidge 54, etc.) Of course, the same seems to be true in politics between these two epic years, with voters deeply unhappy with the incumbents but initially wary, for radically different reasons, of going with a challenger who seemed different than the presidents who came before them.

In the end, Reagan did reassure voters and pulled away in the final days, and now some of the polls seem to be showing Obama doing the same thing in the last week here. That said, there are some areas where the '80-'08 thing falls apart, politically. Reagan came with a very different ideology, while Obama is really promising a return to a once familiar center-left approach.

No, the real analogy is Obama and Shane Victorino, as dramatized by this button that was published in Clout today.

Both came out of Hawaii and started their careers underestimated after bouncing around a little. Both now roam the center, even though Victorino was in right for a time and Obama started out playing left. Both of them can also be a little self-promoting at times. But on the basepaths, no one can catch the original Flyin' Hawaiian. Will anyone be able to catch up to the new one, or will there be a "Victor-in-o-8"? We'll know in about 40 hours.

very divisive, disgraceful, and pathetic. I got sick to my stomach with the amount of Obama/Biden signs at the parade. Can we put politics aside for one day? Plus, I saw a lot of Obama/Biden literature on the ground...not very green. Finally, I don't think Victorino has asked to be affiliated with Obama in any way and I don't think you should make that decision for him.

You had a whole weekend and you came up with THIS?

I think Obama is a great candidate and he has my vote, but I'm not posting to promote Obama but to spread the word about Palin. If there's anyone who hasn't hard Palin's giggly, school-girl, dumb-as-a-rock performance with the "president" of France, you need to before you vote. It's posted many places (even Foxnews). Yes, Palin was pranked and that part maybe I can overlook (except maybe it speaks volumes on Republican style national security). But it's the lack of her vp/presidential comportment with a head of state and her way of just reacting to his words and not leading in any sense of the word that I can't get over. Embarrassing for the United States indeed. I thought at first it was a joke but Palin confirmed its truthfulness. McCain's not going to live forever but if by some wild, freaky accident the two of them do get elected, I'll be sending McCain vitamins to help ensure a long life.

While Utley/Victorino is an appealing ticket, I'm sticking with Hamels/Lidge.

A John McCain presidency will make you look back on the good old days of George W.

"while Obama is really promising a return to a once familiar center-left approach"...."center-left approach". I repeat - Attytood - THE place for comedy on Philly.com///Hey Will - maybe you can help me out here - you know - since you're a "watchdog reporter" and stuff. The LA Times has a video they are withholding from the public in which Barry heaps praise on former PLO spokesman Rashid Khalidi who was propagandizing for them when they were murdering Americans and were listed as a terrorist group by the US. They refuse to release it. Is this not is media malfeasance of an almost astounding degree? They have a video that could change the stakes in this election and they’re hiding it. And they’ve been hiding it since last April. What is your position? Does the public have a right to see this tape? Isn't this yet another example of the media trying to cover up Barry's radical past? A week's worth of stories about Palin clothes but not a peep from the media on this. Will - your profession is a joke.

SBVFT: Lets get a couple things straight: 1) the story of the tape was reported in APRIL. The paper received a copy of the tape AFTER PROMISING the source if would not release it. 3) this is the same person who received $800,000 from a group that McCain chaired. YOUR politics is a joke, buddy: just the same twisted stew of lies, half truths and distortions that just ain't working for Senator Fossil and Governor Nitwit like they did for Bush and Chainee

"A week's worth of stories about Palin clothes but not a peep from the media on this." . . . . . . . They're too busy attacking Palin's first amendment rights, I hear.
Comment removed.

"The paper received a copy of the tape AFTER PROMISING the source if would not release it." It took the LA Times 3 days to come up with this excuse. It is a lie. Plain & simple. There’s a video out there of Obama saying kind things about Khalidi, and on the general principle that information in an open society shouldn’t be kept secret and that the voters should make up their own minds about whether or not they trust certain candidates, this video should be set free.

And it means nothing to Swifty that McCain's foundation gave the guy over a half million.

"Will, when can we expect an article on Obama saying he will bankrupt the coal industry?" . . . it's over on DrudgeReport, and of course it's baloney.

Talking point sleuth
See - this is why swift-lying isn't working in this campaign. --snip-- John McCain served as chairman of the International Republican Institute (IRI) during the 1990s which provided grants worth $500,000 to the Center for Palestine Research and Studies for the purpose of polling the views of the Palestinian people. The Center was co-founded by Khalidi. -- snip -- Martin Peretz, editor of The New Republic and an advisor to the pro-Israel Washington Institute for Near East Policy, disagreed. "I assume that my Zionist credentials are not in dispute. And I have written more appreciative words about Khalidi than Obama ever uttered...the Israelis are trying to live cooperatively and in peace with Palestinians whose unrelenting positions make Khalidi almost appear like a Zionist. -- snip --

"So if somebody wants to build a coal-powered plant, they can. It’s just that it will bankrupt them because they’re going to be charged a huge sum for all that greenhouse gas that’s being emitted." Some people might call this a "quote". To others it's "baloney". Funny how the usual suspects here advocate the suppression of video, audio, recordings, writings or quotes from their Messiah. Wouldn't dare want that thing called the "public" to hear them I guess.
