Most Beltway pundits are tripping over themselves to come up with most enthusiastic "grand slam" phrase for Sarah Palin's speech, but this wasn't supposed to be about them -- it was supposed to be about the "hockey moms" and all the swing voters who haven't been signed sealed or delivered for Barack Obama.

So, what did some honest-to-God swing voters think? Check it out:

George Lentz, 66, Southfield independent: “I was completely underwhelmed. She was a Republican novelty act with a sophomoric script. It was not even a speech I would expect for someone running for the local PTA, much less for vice president.”

Diane Murphy, 42, Sterling Heights independent: “It appears that once she makes up her mind, that is the end of it. We live in a gray world, not every answer is black and white.”

Jan Wheelock, 58, Royal Oak independent: “Nothing worked for me. I found her barrage of snide remarks and distortions to be a major turnoff. She is not a class act. The most important point she made is that she will be an effective attack dog.”

Read the whole thing. There's another example here. (h/t Talking Points Memo)

BTW, I could get a good look at the pin. The only thing I was sure of it wasn't an Alaskan flag pin(the flag is blue with a big dipper on it - state flags can be pretty strange). Anyway, I guess it fits since she wants to make sure she gets the most mileage of of those kids. They still passing the baby around?

cooper, they didn't vet her at all. McCain rushed into his decision because he had a deadline looming and couldn't stomach any of the heavyweights, and never prepared himself or his campaign. Four more years, huh?

db, they didn't even check back newspaper issues from her hometown where she was mayor. we know that because those issues aren't on line. A reporter who went to look into them was told his was the first request. You really think that's adequate? Can't imagine the cabinet.......Leaving to go laugh myself silly now.

"db, why would you expect better vetting of a focus group than of a veep" The veep was vetted just fine, the left's fictional claims to the contrary. But go ahead, keep making up your facts. Such things tend to blow up in your face.

db, why would you expect better vetting of a focus group than of a veep. Poor priorities, indeed.

"Where's her flag pin?" She was wearing a pin on her collar - a Blue Star Family pin for her son in the military. Of course, a few liberal bloggers are stupid enough to think she was wearing an Israeli flag pin and are ready to broadcast their profound revelation into the world. Right up there with their previous claims that Trig is actually Bristol's son.

Hey, Will - when are you and your co-horts in the media gonna realize that there is now a connected army of conservative bloggers and political activists who can run down all the bullcrap your side is spreading? Why don't you just stick to factual reporting instead of operationally integrating Attytood into the Obama campaign? Oh, that's right - the media is not covered by McCain-Feingold. So you can spew Obama talking points outside of FEC regulations while non-media types are restricted. Now it makes sense.

From your link: "Ilene Beninson, 52, Berkley independent: "Her speech contained few statements about policy or the party platform. ... I am not convinced that Palin's experience as a mayor or governor in Alaska meet the qualifications to be vice president, much less one stroke or heart attack away from being commander in chief.” Except Ilene Beninson is a Cindy Sheehan supporter. http://www.riehlworldview.com/carnivorous_conservative/2008/09/dont-look-now-a.html Some swing voter. Makes you wonder just how much work ABC did vetting their focus group.

I missed it. Did she explain why her husband hates America? Or her pastor? Just wondering.

Xi Jah - You say speeches don't matter now, but 30 minutes ago you implied that the how the speech plays in the suburbs does matter. Which is it?

Afte reading through the left, liberal, demoratic blogs here on philly.com I fianally know what desperation smells like. If you ask me Sarah Palin would even look good in a pants suit.

Is it just me or was Sarah Palin impersonating Roseanne Barr in her dress and mannerism. The RNC must passing out LSD because it was like I was watching episode of the 'Rosanne Barr Show' complete with their quirky family in tow, but the crowd conservatives were applauding her. I thought they hated Roseanne Barr? Palin's personal jabs at Obama were suppose to pass for entertainment, but Roseanne Barr sue for steal her skit. I was expecting Palin to spit on stage and grab her crouch. I guess Republicans would vote for a clown just to spite Liberals. Isn't that how Bush got elected for two terms? So Wednesday night Palin did her impersonation of Roseanne Barr; now, I suppose Thursday night John McCain will be performing as King Lear. All this political theater is great fun, but holly moose & muskrat burgers!...WHERE'S THE BEEF!? Does Palin plan to solve our energy crisis with a magical oil fountain that never runs dry somewhere at the North Pole? And how does Palin plan on distinguishing herself from our international adversaries if she's masquerading as a Pit Bull? I'm sorry, but that dog won't hunt in the global field. Acting like Pit Bull will only antagonizes terriorists.

what will happen to this blog after the election? if obama wins then bunch wont be able to post anything so the right wingers can correct him. If McCain wins, Bunch will realize the little impact he really has, along with his fellow bloggers, and just fold up the tents

I'm an independent voter as well (having cashed in my Democrat registration a few years ago) and was turned off by the devisive speeches, more by Gulliani than hers.

Her speech, and Rudy's, was entirely TOO negative. It was mean and catty. The same old politics from the same old party. Enough is enough.

My initial reaction is that Palin is causing a HUGE upsurge in campaign contributions to Obama and a mobilization to attack the McCain/Palin ticket on all fronts. Saying the gloves have come off in this election will be the understatement of the year.

As a registered Independent voter, I was not impressed with the content of Mrs. Palin's speech. Sure she is nice to look at but her speech lacked any specifics on how she or McCain will move America forward. To me, she is a devisive candidate much like Bush. While that might help McCain "energize" the base, I don't she has much appeal to Independents.

"It was aimed at the base in places like Ohio and VA." so, the same strategy that Bush used? Yet she railed against the Washington elite and talked about reform. interesting.

Not aimed at indy's in michigan. It was aimed at the base in places like Ohio and VA. Indys in blue or purple states were not the focus of the speech.

You found someone, somewhere who did not like the speech. Well done...?
