The Eagles' headlines we didn't run

POSTED: Monday, November 24, 2008, 8:41 AM

A quarterback change is a bigger story for the Daily News than a change in the Oval Office -- I was working last night and came uo with a ton of front-page headlines, none of which were used. Feel free to add your own:

Downsized! (picture of McNabb)

McNabb Futures Plummet

The Change We Need (Kolb)

Tie, Kolb.....What Next?

Kevin and Hell

4 minus 5 = -1

I'm not going to be online as much as usual this week, and neither will you. Posting will be lighter than normal. This is an open thread -- document any and all atrocities from the world of politics, not-as-big-as-before business, and sports.

There's no leadership on that team either. The veterans are just mailing it in.

Here's a shot at a few. Reid confirms rumors that he’s an idiot. m Reid this: Buh Biyee. Reid flips Donovan the Bird. Bird brain comes up empty.

"The veterans are just mailing it in." Reid's unceremoniously cut so many of them int he past, so its hardly a shocker they want to back this sinking ship.

When's the last time a veteran that he cut loose could actually play? The only one I can think of is Derrick Burgess. Alan Rossum, maybe, but he was a young player at the time. Going forward, their biggest problem (outside the ? at QB) is the offensive line. It's just gone downhill. I guess if they had Shawn Andrews in the lineup, some of those infamous short yardage plays could have gone differently. Now that I mention it (Yeah ME) it's all Andrews' fault!

Mg - not exactly "cut loose," but they did trade Al Harris while he could still play. What did they get with that 2nd round pick? Anyway, it's time to turn the page. Andy's benching of McCnabb was an aspect of desperation. Clearly, Reid is grasping at straws. No clue. He had no plan, just like he never has a plan. BTW, MG, interesting, isn't it, that you were defending the Eagles while harping on the Phillies for not being willing to do what it takes to bring Philly a championship. I understand why you said that about the Phils - and never expected them to win the world series, but it is pretty funny how it all turned out.

"So, now Citi bites the dust, who or what is next?---}}} There are a lot of other shoes left to drop. There's a whole lot of debt out there that hasn't been revealed yet. CFOs have been sitting on tons o' undisclosed debt.

TPS, Not to mention the biggest gorilla of them all, personal credit card debt carried by most American households. How many people with Citi cards are going to think "hell, if they're going down, I might as well max myself out?" That is, those who are not already at that point.

Trotter woulda helped against TB in that NFC Champ, when receivers and TEs were catching and running clear across the middle of the field. Instead, Trotter was frnachised (waste of a tag) only to be cut, and alter brought back. He also franchised C Simon, to cut him shortly after. I also think Hugh had a little something left.

"There are a lot of other shoes left to drop." Problem is the spiral effect as well. Bad econ means lay offs which equals more foreclosures, more debt gone bad, less consumer spending, which in turn equals more lay offs.

I've always been a McNabb supporter, but in yesterday's 2nd half he turned my stomach. He didn't show an ounce of support for Kolb. He stood by himself on the sideline...he didn't seem to want to interact with teammates...he didn't offer any veteran advice to the young QB while the game was still winnable. I always thought that he was a class act...now I'm beginning to wonder.

Well legatus, he coulda chose to stay away from Reid, who didn't even bother to tell him to his face that he was benched.

The contempt I have for the Phillies comes from the fact that they are basically the same crowd that had such scorn for the fans in 2005 and 06 and now they do it all for the fans - Riiiight. Like I always said about them, they wanted a wild card contender that could get lucky, and that's exactly what happened. Get ready for them to milk this for the next fifteen years. Anyway as far as the Eagles, for all the rap about them cutting loose old players, they seem to have held onto too many for too long. RG tell me again the pro Bowl post-Eagle careers that Simon and Trotter had? Trotter was weak against the pass anyway, so he would have been waving at the TE's and receivers running across the middle of the field. Wasn't Hugh Douglas playing with one arm? And he couldn't play in Jacksonville. Of course that was Jack del Rio's fault. Riiight. I'm telling you that the worst things that happened to the Eagles were at short yardage, and that was because Shawn Andrews was out.

Trotter was brught back after his stint in WSH and played fairly well. In addition, even if letting them go was the right decision, Reid has rarely brought in adequate replacements. My point was that Reid and the team take a cold, calculating approach to players at a certain age. leads me to believe that those types of players aren't exactly gonna stick their neck out for him or the team when the going gets rough.

The fans anymore are acting like a bunch of old ladies, gossiping about what who said to whom and what the expressions on their faces meant and where they stood and so on. Some WIP called even said that McNabb was cheering for the interception because the tv camera showed him clapping after the play. Get a grip, people.

Trotter didn't start until halfway through the season. He couldn't beat out Mark Simoneau (or however you spelled his name). Even then everybody knew he couldn't play on passing downs.

Trotter still came back, essentially to replace himself, since the trifecta of levon kirkland, barry gardner, and mark simoneau were so bad that made an aging Trotter the preferrable start.

RG, I don't blame him for staying away from Reid who handled the situation in a totally classless manner. The problem that I have is that McNabb seemed to treat his teammates with the same disdain that Reid showed toward McNabb. Ever since the T.O. debacle I've had a nagging suspicion that Owens wasn't totally wrong about McNabb having lost the lockerroom. I think he has lost the respect of those he is supposed to be leading...which is, of course, a recipe for continued losing.

They've been a rudderless ship for awhile now. McNabb is just a minor part of the problem.

True...it DOES start at the top with Lurie, Banner & Reid. It's just that sometimes in these sort of situations the QB can get everyone to band together as a team and follow him to victory. Seems that the Eagles have gone in the opposite direction, into total disarray.

I dont want to go voerboard defending him, but I think McNabbs just fed up. Year after year with no wepaons, being asked to carry the load while half the fan base still boos him. Then Reid trades out of the first round, deciding against drafting him more help, to grab a QB in the 2nd round? Throw on top of that, the support that his teammates seemed to give to TO and his nonsense (i.e. attending his b-day party).

I don't know, BOHICA. McNabb looked like a leader the only time in his entire career he had even one decent receiver to throw to (well, outside of that whole super bowl upchucking situation). It wouldn't be so bad if Reid didn't insist on forcing McNabb into an offense that never suited his skills, and refused to run the ball to help set up the pass. I don't think McNabb can ever be fully evaluated unless he has a shot with another coach/another offense.

"McNabb lacks the 'fire in the belly' to win." That's one way of putting it BOHICA, and I can't disagree. I tend to see it more as a case of McNabb being afraid of making a mistake. He won't take a chance to make a positive play if it increases the risk of a negative play (eg. interception). Sometimes a QB needs to have more of a gunslinger mentality...take a chance. Give your receiver an opportunity to make a play after the catch, rather than throwing the ball at his feet or over his head in order that the defender has no chance at the int. He needs to have the confidence that the good plays will outweigh the bad ones and thereby increase the chances of winning.

Personally, I think AJ is the best option at this point. Kolb will not be able to cut it, he looked like a deer caught in the headlights yesterday. Donovan will be off to Chicago ? next year and prosper with the new environment.

No one seems to be focusing on the real problem.. Reid is inept and McNabb needs a chage of environment ,, Time to have a house cleaning and re-build from the bottom up. including ownership and top management.. Where have all the football guys gone-- The Roonies, the Maras , The old "Irish Mafia" of the 40s and the 50s... Lurie should sell, make his bundle and get out of town ASAP. He makes Braman and Tose look like the John Welch of pro football I would even welcome back Joe Kuharich or Mike McCormack , Ed Khayat orGreasy Neale. Reid is repugnant. burt b
