Arlen Specter: Now just another cog in the Philly Democratic machine, as he takes Attytood's advice, finally, and finally switches parties. And so now the Senate Democrats are just waiting for the Al Franken decade to begin, to give President Obama 60 votes and thus full power to impose his socialist regime* on the American people without obstruction.

Discuss what you think of this move.

He was still wrong on the JFK assassination, by the way.

* Just kidding.

    You put your asterisk in the wrong spot. You're the one who needs to take a look at the assassination again. I bet the only person really annoyed by this will be Al Franken. The Republicans are going to go nuclear to keep MN from having two senators now.

    The highly conservative Pat Toomey has a whopping 21 point lead over Specter. I guess Specter saw the writing on the wall. http://www.rasmussenreports.com/public_content/politics/election_2010/election_2010_senate_elections/pennsylvania/election_2010_pennsylvania_republican_senate_primary

    SailAway has it right. The only reason for this move is because he is going to lose the primary. I still don't think he wins PA, though, because now EVERYONE is disgusted with him. This sets up the Republicans to pick up a seat in 2010.

    I'm with bill a. on this one - he still has some 'splaining to do. Unless the DSCC has gotten a blood oath from Specter that he's going to vote in lockstep with Obama's agenda, I'd just as soon that his seat be occupied by fully-committed Democrat, and not a politician scrambling to save his political life.

    Hey, the Dems will now have no excuses for the next two years. Once Franken is seated, they will have 60 votes. So anything that blows up politically can no longer be blamed on the GOP.

    "as he takes Attytood's advice" Within a year, the Dem base will grow to loathe that self-serving weasel as much as the GOP base does. Be careful what you ask for, Will...

    More proof that the republican party (in its current mind-set) has become maginalized. Perhaps this will wake them up and they'll come up with some new ideas or perhaps they will go back to their old ideas of fiscal responsibilty and staying out of private citizens lives. Probably not though. If the republicans continue to listen to the religious right and the neocon fringe they will continue to lose. I have no doubt that Specter will continue to vote with the republicans on a number of issues. This is a smart move for him though. He will win the nomination in 2010 and easily defeat Toomey in November. You can book it.

    No matter how you look at it, the Republicans are screwed. Their only chance at retaining the seat for their party was to support Specter and or admit Pennsylvania is far more progressive than Toomey or Santorum. Rendell, Clinton, Gore, Kerry, Obama, Casey... Not sure why the Republicans stopped fighting for Pennsylvania. The GOP has made itself a purely regional party in the great state of Pennsylvania. Congrats!
