He's good enough, he's smart enough, and doggone it he has 225 more votes than the other guy.
Stuart Smalley is headed to the United States Senate.
Discuss this, or whatever else is on your mind -- it's an open thread. Jan. 5 is a horrible day for blogging. Who knew!

There are many clown in the Senate, what's one more? The real question I'd like someone on the left to answer, with is strait face, is how can any of the lefties who moaned and whined about Florida 2000 for years be happy about Minnesota 2008? Seriously!? You can't possibly reconcile all those two elections. Either they both must be illegitimate or both must be the fair results of the process running it's course...
I would agree that Norm Coleman should concede, except for one small problem.... he won! After listening to all the moaning and wailing about how the R's stole the election from Gore, it's good to see that the Dems aren't above that kind of behavior like they say they are.
James TL: actually only 42% voted for Franken, another 42% for the incumbent, and 16% for an independent.
Why are the same people who supported Ronald Reagan complaining about an entertainer being elected? Whose to say he isn't qualified? Obviously the people of Minnesota (at least more than half of them) think he is.
"They're not actually gonna let this clown steal the election are they?"
Actually that was 2000 and yes, they let Bush steal the election.
The thing I like is that Franken (with the help of Minnesota law) stuck by the recounts until the end--not just until it came out in his favor, but until every vote was actually counted. If Al Gore had done that, we would have been saved from the horror of the past 8 years with W. Now I don't know that Gore would have done everything right--and we might still be in the big financial mess we now are in with a Gore presidency since it stems largely from corporate greed and malfeasance rather than from Bushes many mistakes--but he could not possibly have equaled Bush in starting an unnecessary war, breaking national and international laws, and eroding civil liberties. So, congratulations, Al. I think you have already shown considerable spunk, something most Senators know nothing of.
june, Franken wsa not remiss in paying some of his taxes. The problem was, he paid his taxes, but they couldn't figure out which jurisdiction got what. Happens alot with entertainers and ballplayers who get taxed in several states, etc. The money was always there, the governments couldn't figure how to split it up. BTW, remember Coleman is being investigated for illegal campaign donations. So, would you rather have a bad comic or a bad politician as senator?
Panetta? Does BHO have any original thoughts? Clinton II starts in 15 days.
The inventor, writer and performer responsible for the unfunniest and seemingly unending series of SNL skits ever - the Stuart Smalley series - gets elected to the Senate. So from a comedy standpoint, yes it is indeed disappointing. Well, at least we have Stand-Up Comedian Harry "The Capitol Tourists Stink" Reid who is always dependable for a good laugh. And then there's tomorrow with Burris. Which will be akin to a SNL skit. And who knows what Vaudeville routines Obama will have in store for us in the coming weeks with his cast of Corruptocrats. He's been dependable thus far. The Not-Ready-For-Primetime-Players you might say.
Will Bunch for the senate in pa! Will Bunch for the senate in PA!! Where there's a Will there's a way......I Like Bunch!! Let's elect a man that can relate to the people. A man who sees into the future as if he already knew what was to happen. A man so endowed with wisdom and integrity that only Jesus Christ or ........ Obama would be a comparison.
I can't believe that the people of Minnesota would elect a clown! What the hell is going on???
Yeah, Freddie - from Chief of Staff under Clinton to Obama's DCI. I've always wondered about civilians who get appointed DCI. Why the CIA? What does a civilian know about the intelligence services?
It's Minnesota, the same state that thought knowing how to throw a triple suplex qualifies a person to be governor.

It's unbelievable that he received any votes. This guy, Franken, has been remiss in paying some of his taxes. Oh well, fits right in with the rest of our elected officials. He's a good reason not to trust people voting above the American Idol level.

Franken was a smart comic as a young man and has turned into a smart advocate for fair play as an adult - you guys who immediately dismiss him based on his career as a writer and performer have no idea. So what we need are more Senators and representatives doing corporate America's bidding, dismantling unions and basically sticking it to anyone who can't afford a country club membership - is that what you are saying? Franken will be a strong advocate for the environment, and an equitable economic policy. Yes he has a sense of humor a smart, biting sense of humor. He has now turned his focus and intelligence toward making this a better world. Already famous, already wealthy he won't be corrupted by graft and back room dealings.
Sorry for the multiple posts.
GoPhillies, in a word, yes.
Burris, now Franken, next Caroline Kennedy.......I know the Dems won but with a nation to govern is it really time to clear the bench and make sure all the scrubs get in the game?

taxmemore- Are you familiar with the Minnesota recount law???
calling for recounts until you reach the preferred outcome and then tyring to end the process as soon as possible once desired result is achieved is its own kind of election fraud and will now be pursued by dems everywhere
Al, stay out of airplanes. I hear the Amtrack to Washington is a very pleasant ride.

I think most posters here are predictable on both sides, but most don't go pre emptive.

Ramon - I'd say there's a pretty good justification for thinking that a reaction to a Dem victory, let alone virtually any post by Bunch, would prompt responses of the type I listed. Would you disagree?

Xi Jah
You see, Florida 2000 was a theft. This is a perfectly and legally run recount. The way to tell is by whom is declared the winner.
How bad must it be in the GOP when goofball Fraken beats an incumbant US senator. lol, this is like a drunk reaching rock bottom.

I was referring to the first three posts.
Wow, talk about being pre emptively touchy.
Maybe he'll actually be funny as a Senator...
No steam. This is the same state that elected Jesse the Body Ventura to the governorship. And put the Vikings in a domed stadium.
lol....Franken sucked on the radio but is now a US Senator. The neocons must have steam blowing out of their ears about now.
Not so fast, the Repubs are going to fight this tooth and nail. I just hope Norm concedes, just like he said Franken should have two months ago, you know, for the good of the country. Difference is, Al was not in a position to concede, he and his legal team followed proper constitutional procedure for mandatory re-count.
Hmmm. I wonder if we'll hear any whining about this? Maybe someone might bring up the vast left-wing media bias? Perhaps some mention of a Messiah? Perchance some mention of Obama's corruption, although there's no evidence of such? Possibly some mention of loving terrorists, socialism, race-baiting, or problems in the Black community? I mean usually that's what we hear in response to Americans choosing a Democrat over a Republican, isn't it?
