The Tea Party wages war on democracy in Pa., and it's winning

The right wing won the 2010 election, fair and square, the way elections are supposed to work. So why are they gaming the system, re-writing the time-honored rules of democracy to give their side an unfair advanatage? Their beloved Founding Fathers (top) must be spinning in their graves. The voter ID bill that's wending its way through Harrisburg -- which would disenfranchise thousands of legitimate voters to catch four or five cheaters, if that many -- is a disgrace:
Doug Hill, the association's executive director, said none of the counties has reported even a suspicion of significant voter fraud.
"It just doesn't happen the way supporters are claiming it does," said Hill.
State figures show that of the nearly six million people who voted in Pennsylvania in the 2008 presidential election, just four were convicted of voter fraud.
Near the end of the article, a high ranking public official, House Majority Mike Turzai, raises a red herring, statiing with no proof that ""We have reports of thousands of false voter registrations during every big election cycle." I doubt these numbers are true for Pennsylvania but more importantly, voter registration fraud -- that's typically when people who are getting paid to sign up new voters make some names up to get more cash for themselves -- has nothing to do with voter fraud, the problem this bill claims to address. Turzai is playing a dishonest game of bait and switch. If he can't produce "reports of false voter registrations," he's lying to the people of Pennsylvania and he needs to be censured.

"Like seeing a problem wih verifying who a gun owner is before letting them buy ammo? You can't be for one and not the other."
Msl....can we safely conclude, since you see no problem with asking for ID prior to selling ammo, that you also ok with asking for ID prior to voting? legatus- "Which many states will provide to you, for free." . . . . Really General? So, how do states prevent illegal aliens from getting these magical wonder cards?
Will, can't you at the very least do your journalism job and tell us what the party line breakdown is for this vote? This bit of information is lacking in both your own post and in the article that you reference. I would suspect that more than a few "D"'s will vote for this piece of legislation, but in your cocoon, only the evil Tea Partiers are to blame. Is that what you learned in college, to pen your feelings instead of facts? What a disgrace. m13sully

Will, I anticipate that your tone will only get more hysterical with each handful of points your dear leader drops in the polls. The next year should be such fun reading your posts. m13sully
Please give me a break with the "just four were convicted of voter fraud" BS. We aren't interested in the few dopes who got caught we are interested in stopping those who got away with in the past from getting away with it again.

Bucky - you like to present yourself as non-partisan.
Do you seriously think that the Republican support for these kinds of bills are about anything other than an attempt to suppress the vote of people likely to vote for Democrats?
You even acknowledge that these laws are likely lead to virtually no reduction in voter fraud.
Hilarious. Talking point sleuth

Where is your evidence that these laws would prevent significant amounts of voter fraud from "those who got away with it in the past?"
Absolutely hilarious. Talking point sleuth
This article is actually enlightening. You refer to "Their Founding Fathers" Does that mean there are other Founding Fathers of the great country that we do not know about? The Tea Party is blamed for every thing that the libs cannot find someone else to blame. Remember, nothing is every their fault. If you do not believe that there is voter fraud in Pennsylvania/Philadelphia then you are living in a dream world. Showing an ID is required in practically everything we do and where we go. Remember John Krupa running as a Tea Party candidate put up by the Democratic Party. We challenged 19,000 of his 24,000 signatures on his petitions. Guess who removed himself from the ballot? Obama is already easing restrictions on the boarders to make piece with the Latino Community. LaRasa loves the President. This country is in serious trouble. We need to clean up our voter registrations. Showing an ID when you go to vote is fine with me. Most of us already have a photo ID. If you do not have anything to hide, then you should not mind getting a photo ID. Voting machines are another problem for voter fraud. We can talk about that at another time teacup
===]]] Don't you remember ACORN and voter fraud in PA? [[[===
I really have to give Republican toadies credit for their ability to repeat assertions over and over, even though they have no evidence to back their claims.
What evidence do you have of ACORN-related "voter fraud" in PA?
Absolutely hilarious.
Talking point sleuth
The only thing wrong with the Republican proposal that I see is that it lacks provisions for making photo voting ID readily accessible to all eligible voters. The idea for voters to show photo ID makes sense - I still remember the first time I voted and every time I moved being stunned that I didn't have to show ID.

What non-dream world evidence do you have of voter fraud in PA/Philly that would be reduced through voter ID legislation? Talking point sleuth
Can somebody explain this? ""Many of those people my organization represents are homeless and simply do not have ID,"
If they are homeless how are they assigned to a voting district? bird11
