The Onion: "Gorgeous 25-Year-Old Dead at 79"

Leave it to The Onion to kind of sum up the disconnected thoughts I had on the death today of movie-star-turned-gossip-page icon Elizabeth Taylor, which is going to be the lead story in a lot of American newspapers tomorrow, despite a) that whole war and natural disaster thing taking place far, far away and b) the fact that I wonder if people under the age of 40 have any sense of who Elizabeth Taylor once was...beyond her strange friendship with Michael Jackson.
I mean, I'm an ancient 52 and by the time I was old enough to become aware of her, it wasn't so much from movies -- that was mostly winding down, even way back then -- but because she was all over the supermarket checkout line, what with her many marriages and divorces and what not. She was clearly a great and stunningly actractive actress -- I learned that later in life seeing some of her old movies like "Cat on a Hot Tin Roof" -- but even by the late 1960s it seemed like she was becoming kind of a paleo-Paris Hilton, more of a celebrity for being a celebrity than anything else. She did ultimately contribute a lot -- an early fighter for AIDS awareness, for example -- and she'll be missed for that, as well as for the way she once defined glamour, a long time ago.
Still, I wonder if her passing is a bigger deal to the generation of people who edit newspapers than to the generation of people who don't read them.
I will say this is interesting -- she outlived her obituary writer.
- RG might appreciate Liz's dilemma in 1965. Having been born in London to American parents, she enjoyed dual citizenship as a British subject and US citizen. She applied to renounce her US citizenship in 1965 to evade US taxation of her foreign income. However, legal renunciation of allegiance to the US must be consummated by a formal declaration before a US State Dept officer, but it turns out that Liz just couldn't make herself say the words.
- Considering that the top bracket income tax rates are half of what they were in the 60s? What problem?
- Since everyone is picking their favorite golden age Hollywood star I'll take Ingrid Bergman any day of the week and twice on Sunday. bird11

Seemed appropriate, given that we are discussing the death of a movie star who was famous in the 50s, no? - Listen wimpy- I have had enough of you and I will fly to Philly and reach down your throat and pull your heart out.

TAMPA, Fla. - Vice President Joe Biden has visited the New York Yankees' spring training camp.
Biden spent around 30 minutes on the third-base side of George Steinbrenner Field on Wednesday while the Yankees were taking part in early defensive drills. He was with Sen. Bill Nelson, D-Fla., and both wore Yankees hats.
The vice president talked with team officials, including manager Joe Girardi and spring training instructor David Wells, along with a number of players."

Liz was a hottie. Shame she let it all fall apart due to drugs and booze. General Turgidson

I remember wondering how the doctor who examined her disguised as a boy knew she actually was a girl (my sister was 9 years younger than I), but by the time I next became aware of her, there was no question how you knew she was a girl. Always remarkable as a beauty and as an actress. My favorite role (by far) was in Raintree County with her good friend Montgomery Clift.

I never saw any of Taylor's movies. All I remember of her was the multiple marraiges, that friendship with Michael Jackson, and John Belushi imitating her on "Weekend Update". SteveMG

Fascinated
I think she set the template for Paris Hiltons of the future -- the difference is she was someone who devolved from talented actress to someone who increasingly was just a celebrity for being a celebrity -- whereas Hilton just skipped that first step and went straight to pointless celebrity, with no talent. will- //and went straight to pointless celebrity, with no talent. ///
I don't know about the no talent part. Ever see Paris Hilton's first film? Check out the ending, she's awesome!
I guess Will is trying to beat Bill At to the punch this time. usually Will writes something and Bill comments on how pointless the topic is.
I'll say this about Ms. Taylor any comparison of her to Paris Hilton should be considered libel. bird11

I believe you are right (we had to agree sometime). Stunning beauty with whom I shared the birthday (significantly different year). SHe had become a checkout line headline, had some incredible acting chops. I would also suggest "Who's afraid of Virginia Wolf" to the younger crowd for an example of a brilliant performance. The Onion is one of the most irreverant websites around-and I love it. RIP Miss Taylor. georgel
