Shocker: Republicans vote to likely kill off what's left of public education in Chester

This summer I wrote about the Corbett administration's fox-guarding-the-henhouse plan of placing a leading advocate for charter schools in charge of drafting a blueprint to "save" public education in the beleaguered Chester-Upland school district. Interestingly, the plan announced by that pick, Joe Watkins, called for radical change and steep cuts but would have kept the district intact until 2015. Except that the, ahem, Republicans on the board rejected this plan, so now it's not clear what happens but you have to think the privatization of schools in the poverty-stricken Delco community will come sooner rather than later. If you didn't know better, you'd almost think the fix was in from Day One.

Of course, there already is the privatized operator of a large charter school in Chester -- his name is Vahan Gureghian, and he just happens to be Gov. Corbett's largest campaign donor. Since Gureghian entered the charter school business, he began building a home in Palm Beach -- rendering at top.

Is this a great country or what?

Clearly the ideas of education, in many cases of impoverished children coming from challenging environments, and profit are not contrasting.

Competition led to America having the best schooling in the world. Today, the US public school sector is awash in non-competitive union employees which sufficate taxpayers, are defended by lawyers and bleed a nations youth to death.

End the charade. Eliminate the Dept of Education. Return control of public schools to the states. Eliminate public unions. Return education to the children...NOT THE ENTITLED.

They start by underfunding, then saying look at all the problems! Only private businesses can save them all!

Then they take all the money and cut wages. Everyone knows that desperate people will work for any amount of money.

Now all the money goes to CEO and not the workers.

    Bingo, job complete.

Republicans are turning the USA into a third world country...

@ Fishtown - Actually that would be the Democrats. Just as they did during the Great Depression, Democrats are extending a Recession by passing draconian taxes and "reform" laws which keep small and medium businesses from hiring and keeping the middle class down (Obamacare, Dodd Frank, Consumer Protection Bureau, etc...).

Several economists have concluded all the "progressive" reforms keep the US from recovering. Fortunatly for FDR, he had WWII to bail him out...Obama isn't as lucky meaning that recovery could be decades away.

Below is the UCLA research if you care to tempt fate.

Gee. I bet I could even find one professor that thought you were an insightful intellectual. That wouldn't change the opinion of the 99% of the others.

ALL of the economists today that were right about Bush tax cuts being harmful to the economy, that the stimulus was beneficial, you know the liberal, left wing ones.

If you stopped watching Fox News so much you might hear from the real experts.

Of course, per typical Republican SOP you attack with a nonsense argument.

Those Charter schools are beautiful. Spotless, sprinklers, basketball courts, grass better than a country club. Go look at them in that god allfull city.

Wanda Mann is a Republican? If I read the article correctly she cast the deciding vote in the 5-4 decision.
