Seriously, NPR, what the hell is a "news analyst"?

POSTED: Monday, October 25, 2010, 4:43 PM

My favorite media guru, the NYU "mindcaster" Jay Rosen, weighs in on a bizarre aspect of the Juan Williams bruhaha, which is that NPR has people who have the ability to "analyze" what the news means while remaining completely free of dreaded "opinions." Good sidetrip into the mind of arguably the most insipid person in all of Beltway journalism, the inscrutable Cokie Roberts.

According to the Daily Show, Williams was fired for violating NPR's policy against saying anything interesting.

I'm with you on Cokie, will - how can I forget her bemoaning the Congressional defeat of her beltway buddy "moderate" Sue Kelly to a "rock musician" *insert horrified face*. But I'm afraid the train has long since left the station on the news analyst question: as long as readers/viewers/listeners are less interested in the facts of the news and more interested in reveling their feelings about some(or all) of those facts, then we're stuck with news analysts. And even though I wish the takeaway from the NPR/William brouhaha was that context is important, the discussion of it makes it clear that message is very lost.

Will, this is easy, a "news analyst" is one who toes the NPR party line. Nina does, Juan didn't. She stays, he's gone. You don't need much news "analysis" to figure that out.

Mike, you mean like Jesse Jackson admitting to being relieved that the footsteps he heard behind him in Harlem one night belonged to a whitey? You're pretty funny. See what being a knee-jerk liberal does to you? This is great. The Libs PC code actually came back and bit them in their a++. Truth is better than fiction.

Williams should have kept his job, only so we could ridicule him more. This is the same guy who wrote, some years ago that we should not be fearful of Black people just because of their skin color. See what faux news does to you?

cokie was/is a much more reliable fountain of inside-the-beltway conventional wisdom than juan williams could ever hope to be.
