From the AP:

WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. (AP) — Democrat Barack Obama said Tuesday he was outraged and appalled by the latest comments from his former pastor, who asserted that criticism of his fiery sermons is an attack on the black church and the U.S. government was responsible for the creation of the AIDS virus.

The presidential candidate is seeking to tamp down the growing fury over Rev. Jeremiah Wright and his incendiary remarks that threaten to undermine his campaign.

At least the 2008 election is rarely dull.

Here's a snippet:

"I am outraged by the comments that were made and saddened by the spectacle that we saw yesterday," he said.

Obama also distanced himself from the man in a way he has been reluctant to in the past.

"The person that I saw yesterday was not the person that I met 20 years ago," he said. "His comments were not only divisive and destructive, but I believe that they end up giving comfort to those who prey on hate, and I believe that they do not portray accurately the perspective of the black church."

"They certainly don’t portray accurately my values and beliefs," he said.

I'm curious what kind of reaction this will get. The parts that I've heard so far didn't quite live up to the headlines; he was really grasping for words and sounded a bit too measured in response to questions from reporters. The talking heads seem to like it so far, though; Chris Matthews is comparing him to Richard II.

I'm sure this is the last word on the subject...just kidding.

I'll post more reaction as it comes in. Here's some video if you haven't seen it:

Wright is taking Obama down. Obama once again has to choose between his candidacy and Rev. Wright. It looks as if he made his choice. However, he chose this course of action only because the whole Rev. Wright thing is dismantling his candidacy peice by piece. When he had the chance to do it when he was at his strongest politically because it was the right thing to do, he balked and fretted about America's race problem instead. He may survive because of this, but I don't think the Rev. Wright will completely go away. By the way, he also may end up with an Al Sharpton problem due to the aquittal of the NYC cops in the groom shooting.

Obama could strangle Rev. Wright to death, and still get 90% of the black vote. A good move on Obama's part to appease the rest.

The Arkansas Mafia got to Rev. Wright - the Clintonistas have some dirt on the Rev and he flipped to go against Obama to keep them at bay. It's typical Clinton-style "scorched earth" tactics against anyone who dares to challenge them.

Wright is "dismantling" BO's candidacy? That's silly. MSM gives it so much space and airtime--because it is the MSM--but don't be distracted from the REAL issues in this campaign, for God sake ($3 trillion spent in Iraq, festering a breeding ground for terrorism that makes 80s Afghanistan look quaint, gross fraud and lies from the Bush admin, torture, the economy, etc., etc., etc.)

I actually feel bad for Obama. He was getting thrown under the bus by his own Pastor. If he doesn't win this thing, it will be no mystery why. Obama seemed genuinely upset by the rants of Wright for reasons beyond his campaign.

Rev. Wright is free to say and do whatever he chooses. Some of you were not going to vote for Obama anyway, you just needed an excuse. I'm one of those people who happens to love Rev Jeremiah Wright and his liberation theology. Why isn't the news media reporting what is really happening in the U.S. and around the world? High unemployment, gasoline prices, war in Iraq, home foreclosures, high crime rate and the list goes on.

Wright is more worried about Wright than the consequences of his stupidity - he's after the publicity alone. How this reflects poorly on Barack Obama is the responsibility of the MSM. If they ignore the moron, he goes away. If they shine the spotlight on him, it does Obama no good in the eyes of those who see race before all else. Do the Clintons even GO to church? How about McBushie? Didn't he court the endorsement of a much worse religious fanatic? The MSM should start covering these "problems" equally among the candidates.

What a Joke!!!!I have read everyone comments. I seen some that have conspiracy theories and the down right misguided comments of some. Obama gets what he deserves. First off, he's nothing more then a glorified cheerleader.....How does he really propose to change this country, with only veto power and and a little bit of influence. Personally I could care less who wins in November. The real change has to be getting people in congress that know what they are doing. As for Obama, he plays to inexperienced voters to win. These are the same people that don't know how to pick they're noses without their parents approval. And thats reality....and yes, I do want change. I just want it the real way. Not just a failed attempt at it....and say well we tried!! Think about it! Peace out!!

Ah...it finally looks like Obama wants to be President. I was getting concerned that this was all pretend. I agree with his stand on not getting down in the sewer with his opponents when it comes to the attacks, but remaining silent does not help either. I hope now, we can put the Rev. Wright junk to rest. Because I, being a Christian, really don't care what this particular Minister has to say. Unless of course we are electing him President...Ahh..probably not.

"the ridiculous notion that the clintons are behind wright's comments is simply that ..." - You may very well be right, suzy, but... "Shortly before he rose to deliver his rambling, angry, sarcastic remarks at the National Press Club Monday, [Rev. Jeremiah] Wright sat next to, and chatted with, Barbara Reynolds," The New York Daily News' Errol Lewis begins Tuesday. "A former editorial board member at USA Today, she runs something called Reynolds News Services and teaches ministry at the Howard University School of Divinity," he adds. "It also turns out that Reynolds - introduced Monday as a member of the National Press Club "who organized" the event - is an enthusiastic Hillary Clinton supporter." (RAWStory)

"he was really grasping for words and sounded a bit too measured in response to questions from reporters" - I agree. He should tie Wright down, remove his entrails and then burn them ritualistically in front of Wright - Then he could sever Wrights limbs, and finally put the reverend out of his misery. That would settle this once and for all and then we can finally get back to those minor issues (health care, the economy, the war - ya know, all that pointless garbage that distracts from the important issue of race).

The comments of Wright give insight into the values and beliefs of Obama. Obama stated that Wright has been his spiritual advisor and head of the church he belongs to for 20 years. There is a long history of Wright making these type of comments and it is not credible that Obama was not aware of what Wright believes in. It's more likely that Obama has crafted a general message that both hides his true beliefs and gives him leeway to lead the country in a direction that most Americans do not support. Is he going to denounce his wife for her "first time proud to be an American" statement. She talks like someone who bought into what Wright is saying. This guy will divide the country more than Bush did. Why do we keep getting stuck with lousy candadates that are nominated by southerners and midwesterners? These areas of the country contribute less than their share to the overall good of the country yet they are selecting candidates and electing presidents.

tarik, Steverino knows Obama is Christian, he just wants to emulate the Kewl Kidz on Fox and talk radio. See the thing about elections, especially presidential elections is mud throwing. All he media people know that it's Obama running for president, they don't want to know what he'll do, they want to throw Wright mud on his shoes as if Obama is Wright or vice-versa. The Bushpublican party is going to need a name change after this election because the only people who will vote for McCain are the 27% too stupid to figure out that George W Bush and his familiars have ruined this country in just 8 years. Try to keep pretending that the Rev. Wright matters. McCain's presidency would reduce this country to second class status and it isn't clear that Obama has the time to really change that course.

It means that people who do not follow politics at the level required to make an informed choice keep choosing poorly qualified people for candidates based on superficial, meaningless or untrue reasons. I don't care how well Obama runs a campaign. I want to know what his objectives and priorities will be if he is elected. If he can't provide detailed answers to those questions, why does he want to be president? He'll unite the country? Great. To what end? If my comment is the stupidest thing you ever read, you need to read a little more. Of the top of my head, claiming that the american government created AIDs to wipe out black people trumps what I said. Take a look at the states that elected Bush. Do you think they made a good choice? The northeast, Illinois, and the west coast pretty much carry this country. Just take a look at where tax revenue is coming from. Not Alabama, South Carolina or Iowa.

Wright's explanations are ridiculous. We don't know the black church! I don't care about the black church. I care about what Obama's spiritual leader has to say. If Wright wasn't Obama's church leader, he'd just be another racist nutcase. Frankly, I'm sick of hearing about religious beliefs. Muslims marching in the streets of Philadelphia protesting a cartoon published in the Netherlands and yet silent when Bin Ladin says he is fighting a Muslim religious war. Not a peron on the street, not any significant outcry. Spiritual leaders? Please. They don't have a clue. In the meantime, these three religions, Christian, Jews and Muslims, have fostered wars for 200 years. All from the same religious background, all worshipping the same "God", all claiming the Old Testament is the word of this so called "God". Looks like evil to me. And the beat goes on with scum like Wright. God is not the church or a religion. Never let another man get between you and God. God appointed no one as the intermediary between God and man. Only men did.

Sad to see Obama pandering. The more he does, the less that distinguishes him from McClinton. It is amazing, however, just how much an "angry black man" riles up so many. Wright has said little that is substantially different in nature than that said by white preachers with millions of followers. They have blamed 9/11, Katrina, whatever, on Americas "sins." They have promoted conspiracy theories that a ecific subset of Americans are responsible for Aids. This whole episode is simply proof that right wing media has an ever increasingly powerful stranglehold on the American media. Hopefully, Americans will rise above this garbage. Time will tell.

How exactly did Wright's ravings subvert Obama anyway? I have heard whacky rantings from professors, friends, relatives and such but I know what to leave in and what to leave out and keep the relationship. I don't have to disown my friend because he says whacky things. I'm secure enough to go about my business without suddenly turning into a Jeramiah Wright. The same goes for Obama. Wright probably ran a good church that did good work. If he said ridiculous things at the same time, I'm pretty sure tht people just took the good with the bad, secure that they could manage for themselves what's right and wrong. Heck many of the critics have no problem torturing people, locking people up for years with no concern over their guilty or innocent, would saddle our descendents with trillions of dollrs of debt, use up what precious resources we have, yet they think some lunatic's ravings cuse more harm. Or whe the present Pope called Ismal a violent religion? Why isn't McCain explaining his anti-Catholic ministers remarks. There are food riots around the world, a potential out of control inflation in Europe (remember the 1930s), growing nationalism in China, sky rocketing oil prices, and a failing war in Afghanistan (not to mention the quagmire in Iraq). But I guess it's easier for the media to focus on the rantings of an old man than real issues.

Truthbetold should be told some truth. Terry McAuliffe himself told Carl Levin in 2004 that if Michigan moved up their primary, there was no way the delegates would be seated at the convention. Now that the tables have turned, McAuliffe has conveniently flipped and wants to cherry pick the votes from Michigan, when Clinton didn't have the integrity to leave her name off the ballot. That's the only way she can claim an advantage, which unfair ballots. Just like 2000.

As someone who has been concerned about many U.S. policies that make allies of dictators and the times since and including the Mexican War when my country attacked someone who was not attacking us, I found some truth in several of Rev. Wright's sound bites and suspected that if I heard the entire sermons nearly all would make sense. BUT I now have heard him make extended remarks and it is clear that he is way off base. Obama is right to denounce and reject him. But I do wish that Obama had sounded a little more outraged in his tone of voice. Something between what he sounded like today and the screaming Rev. Wright denounce the U.S.

What kills me about so many of the posts here is that many of you have previously asked for Obama to distance himself from Rev. Right. Today he does exactly that and what a surprise, that STILL isn't good enough for you. I like many other Obama supporters have watched the latest episodes of "The Rev. Wright Show" in total disbelief. His appearance on PBS was actually well done he almost sounded humble. I found the appearance in front of the NAACP to be mostly positive until he stated talking about how white and black children learn differently. As a black college grad I found this to be ridiculous but I still thought that overall it was a good speech. His "performance" in front of the National Press Club was just WRONG. He had absolutely NO business being there and I feel that this was all bout his ego. As he himself has said, "he is a preacher and not a politician." A preacher has NO business speaking in front of this group. It's time for him to GO AWAY.

Just who do you think he was representing on the south side of Chicago if he hasn't stood up for black Americans? As far as him not being able to relate to the things that Rev. Wright spoke about, that is ridiculous as well. So because he went to Harvard that makes him not black enough? It's this STUPID kind of thinking that has black children believing that they shouldn't be "A" students because it isn't perceived as being "cool" by some of their peers. Stop falling for the "Jedi Mind Trick!" Remember, that only worked on "those with weak minds,"

It's not about Wright. He's just a nut job that nobody, including Obama, takes seriously. It's all about finding an edge, or a chink in the armor so we can keep doing what's worked so well the last fifteen years.

At the risk of a double post, what I just posted and didn't show is just that Wright is just another windbag that nobody really takes seriously, other than call his noise for what it is. This was never about anything but getting an edge. Clinton and the Republicans just want to keep on doing what's worked so well for us the last fifteen years.

I think Obama is very sad that he had to make a statement like this regarding his mentor Rev. Wright. But, i think he is doing the right thing this time because it is clear that Rev. Wright is using all of the extra publicity that he has received because of Obama to harm instead of heal. Rev. Wright should be ashamed of himself and he really should know better than to use his influence to sabotage instead of help. Hopefully people know that Senator Obama can not control what Rev. Wright says - But atleast he acknowledges the danger in what in what is being said by Rev. Wright and is trying to do as much damage control as possible so that his canidancy does not become wrapped around Rev. Wright's outrageous and false comments.

How's this for a fictional political thriller: Obama to Wright this past weekend, "why don't you go out and make a complete ass of yourself the next couple of days. You can look good to your congregation, and I can denounce you and look good to everyone. Later when I get elected you can sleep in the Lincoln bedroom for the whole sumer." I'd read it (if there was some sex mixed in, not Obama and Wright, that would be too much to even think about).

I can hear Obama in private now: "I don't have a CHANCE of being nominated unless I say this now. I'll say ANYTHING to get over the 'hump', ANYTHING AT ALL!"

When I hear people in line saying, "G-d D--n George Bush, isn't that the same as saying GD America?" I think it is. So, this would make you as guilty as Rev. Wright. Pennyslvania has a serious race problem. It is one that is said in private, at tables, among family, at your local bars and among your friends. In the South, they say their racist statements openly. Up here, we say it behind someone's back. It's the same thing just done differently.

beauty ... you feel sad??? ... a month ago obama made a "race speech" regarding the comments made by wright ... he did not denounce wright but regarded him still as his mentor/friend .... the same comments (and then some) were reiterated this week .. what's the difference??

Hillary is the favorite now. Desperation move by Obama. Unless he blows away Clinton in the remaining states, Hillary has this in the bag.

"Wright is just another windbag that nobody really takes seriously,.." Posted by SteveMG ------- Sorry Steve, but Obama's radical priest is not "just another windbag that nobody takes seriously". He's a dangerous demogogue who seems intent on dividing whites and blacks, and fomenting hate. Did you hear the cheers in his church and at his appearance at the Nat'l press Club?

Mike, no it most definitely NOT the same thing. There is a difference. For example, when officials and servicemen take their oaths of office, they swear to preserve and protect the Constitution of the United States. There is no divine right of kinghip and in spite of this President's insistence, the President does not have the authority to enact his own law. There is no Constitutional elevation of the President to sovereignity. He is the Chief Executive of one of the three co equal branches of our government, and we have a right to criticize him, even if that criticism goes to extremes that offend you. When it comes to saying "G-d D--n America", that goes to the extreme of d--ning all of us, when the vast majority are in our own ways trying to make the nation a better place, and in spite of our flaws, won't give up.

Jones, no kidding he's a demagogue, but he isn't that dangerous. Besides, Obama has never uttered a word that gives any hint that he's been "brainwashed" by Wright. He's been quite the opposite. His message is that we have to put our differences aside, not wallow in them, which is something you seem to share with Wright. It's incredible that you think Wright's divisiveness is any worse than yours. This comes from somebody who supported the use of wedge issues at election times to divide the electorate. This comes from somebody who would lump anybody who disagreed with him into some sort of liberal commie socailist terrorist camp in order to keep us divided. You are the advocate of division as much as Wright or even Hilary Clinton.

Geez Steve, you've thrown a lot of accusations at me, none of which you can even remotely prove. I think you're displaying the propensity of liberals to accuse conservatives of that which they themselves do (or soon plan to do).

Actually it's your own words that betray you. Perhaps if you tried actually thinking through the things you say, you would realize how preposterous your position is. Notable is your use of the dreaded "L" word. It just proves your point to call somebody a liberal. I can prove my point about your desier to keep us divided by your advocacy of the candidates who have the most to gain by keeping people divided. You support candidates with links to people no less divisive that Jeramiah Wright without batting an eye. I wonder how conservative you really are, or are youactually a right wing radical? Did you know that by cutting taxes and creating these massive deficits, you actually have not cut taxes in the long run? In fact, not only will that untaxed money have to be paid eventually, you are putting the interest bil on your kids. How conservative is that? Does that even show that remotsest trace of responsibility? When faced with an enormous strategic disadvantage, namely oil dependence, are your solutions would be ANWR and nucular power, again shifting the burdens of scarcity and waste onto future generations? Just a couple of questions there big fella. I have been clear and repetitive about those issues. As far as your characterizations of Obama, he's one the few black politicians who have actually insisted that the black community has to stop looking elsewhere to make progress, quite the opposite of what Jeremiah Wright says. Clinton and McCain want to give handouts (have you forgotten the gas tax holiday already?) Obama is the only one with the sense or the guts to oppose it. You're too busy reflexively pouncing on the slightest "edge" that you don't even know what you're fighting against or even what you're fighting for. I know both of the Democrats have big time health care plans, but neither one will ever see the light of day, so I'm not worried about them.

Hey Steve, I'm amused that you'd be so offended at being referred to as a "liberal". Don't you realize that "it's your own words that betray you". Can you say, "in the tank toady"?

Funny thing Jones is that you can't tell whether I'm a liberal or a conservative. That shines some light on just how crazily partisan you are. All you know is that I disagree with you so that must mean I'm a liberal. There are worse things in the world than being a liberal. What is remarkable about what you say is not that you called me a liberal but that you don't know the difference. I think it's pretty fairly understood what a liberal is, but do you really know what a conservative is?

Hey engineer: RE: "mr smerconish is not going to allow to many opinions about his candidate Obama thats why Im cancelling my subscription to the Phila Inquirer." Just for your information, mr. smerconish is a far-left liberal who, among other things, loves abortion on demand. Since he is simply incapable of rational thinling on the social issues, you shouldn't be surprised that he will allow any opinions that contradict anything that degrades his candidate Obama. Capeesh?
